Before I read this excellent biography, if you had asked me if I knew N. Krishnaswamy I would have said, of course, I know him as a handsome gentleman with an ever present smile on his face, soft spoken and with a plethora of films and documentaries to his credit.

Humble to a fault, he hardly ever used I – the first person singular, in his conversation. I am sure his biographer must have had a hard time ferreting information about NK’s extraordinary career from him.

This biography has brought to light the many faceted personality of NK most of which I was blissfully unaware. Kudos to Ranimaindhan, the biographer, for this inspirational

contribution

Having known Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar from my Kozhikode days, NK invited me to view the rough cuts of his documentary on the maestro. Viewers will recall that this was one of the very popular series on Great Masters which included stalwarts like Semmangudi, Ariyakudi, Rajaratnam Pillai, Madurai Mani lyer, and a host of other masters.

My brother Subbudu who was also present told me how he was pleasantly surprised at NK’s erudition and knowledge of Carnatic music when he was a witness to his directing the highly successful series on Saint Thyagaraja, based on the Pancharatna kritis.

This was at the AVM and Prasad studios. It was a revelation that NK studied music as a subject in the Annamalai University under the guidance of the great Tiger Varadachari.

The biography reveals that there is hardly any facet of film making that NK is not an expert in, be it a selection of story, screen play writing, direction, camera work, editing and finally marketing the entire works. But unfortunately being blessed with this multi faceted talent is only half the battle.

You have to find the finance. Money, (the saying goes) is the root of all evil. But the evil is inevitable. Those days there was no institution like the Film Finance Corporation and one had to use one’s wits to make financiers part with their money.

One has to marvel at the persuasive powers of this Papanasarn born (not far from Kumbakonam!) genius. Money came in driblets and there were many interruptions in production but NK, made of sterner stuff, would not succumb to obstacles.

As one deeply involved in the birth and growth of television in this country I must congratulate NK for some outstanding docudramas he has prepared for Doordarshan. Not all his creations are high brow. His serial Mel Madi Kali featuring Vivek was hilarious. To mark the Golden Jubilee of India’s struggle for freedom he produced ‘Indian stage and freedom struggle’ excellent material for students of historical research.

NK’s organizational capacities are known only to his colleagues in the industry. No wonder he is called CTA Krishnaswamy for Cini Technicians Association, an organization to contend with, is his brain child and he has nursed it to adulthood.

Did you know that the first Open Air Theatre was his innovation?

He is the master Gate Crasher who has dared to barge into many a VIP stronghold to get things done. I am a Delhiwallah and know how difficult it is.

It is unfair to the biographer for me reveal all the interesting anecdotes in the adventurous career of NK. I thoroughly enjoyed going through the deft handling by Ranimaindhan of the various challenges faced by NK.

In fact I finished reading in three sessions despite my failing eye sight.

Like Oliver Twist in the Dickens novel we ask for more.

Ah! That reminds me that Kitcha (that’s how Sivaji sir lovingly addressed NK) will be crossing 90. He looks deceptively young. I am 92+ and believe that I have the credentials to bless him and his 66 years comrade Jayalakshmi. It is not a ‘family’ in the traditional sense. It is more a well run corporate body.

முன்னாள் இயக்குநர்,

திரைப்படத் துறையின் தனித் தன்மைகளில் ஒன்று திரையில் தெரியும் ஆளுமைகளைப் பலரும் அறிந்து வைத்திருப்பதும் அவர்களது ஒவ்வோர் அசைவையும் ஆர்வத்தோடு கவனிப்பதுமாகும். திரையின் பின்னே இருந்து இயக்கும் ஆளுமைகளைப் பற்றி அறிவதுமில்லை. அறிய முற்படுவதுமில்லை. அதிலும் அவர்களில் சாதனையாளரை அறிவதில்தான் திரையுலகச் சரித்திரம் நிறைவடைகிறது என்பதையும் நம்மில் பலர் உணர்வதில்லை.

திரைப்படம் என்பது ஒரு குழுவின் கூட்டு முயற்சியின் வெளிப்பாடே. எனவே முன், பின் இயக்கங்களில் சம்பந்தப் பட்டவர்கள் அனைவருமே அதன் ஆதிக்கத்தில் பங்கேற்பவர்களே.

திரையுலகப் பின்புல ஆளுமைகளிலும் ஒரு துறை வல்லமை உடையவர், பல்துறை வல்லமை உடையவர்கள் என இருவகையினர் உண்டு. முன்னவர் எண்ணிக்கையில் அதிகம். பின்னவர் சிலரே. அந்தச் சிலரிலும் வெள்ளித்திரை, சின்னத்திரை, மேடை நாடகம், நடிப்பு, பாட்டு என்று பல்கலை வல்லமையில் பரிமளித்தவர் மிக மிகச் சிலரே.

பல்கலை வல்லமையில் பரிமளித்த அந்த மிகச் சிலரில் ஒருவரது வாழ்க்கைச் சரிதத்தைத்தான் வாசிக்கப் போகிறீர்கள்.

திரைப்படக் கலை மிக்க நுணுக்கமானது. பல்வேறு அம்சங்கள் அதனுள் அடங்கும். திரைப்படக் கலையை முற்றிலும் அறிந்தவர் திரைப்படத் தயாரிப்பாளராக இருத்தல் சிறப்பானது.

அதனினும் சிறப்பு இந்தக் கலை வல்லமை இரத்தத்தில் ஊறிய விஷயமாக, பால்ய வயதிலேயே பல்கலை வல்லவராக இருந்து, முறையாகக் கற்றறிந்து வளர்ந்தவராக இருப்பது.

இவை எல்லாவற்றிலும் சிறப்பு திரைப்படக் கலை பீஷ்மாச்சாரியாரான எஸ்.எஸ். வாசனிடம் குருகுல வாசம் போலும் இருந்து அநுபவக் கல்வியும் பெற்றுத் தேர்ந்து முழுமை பெறுவது. இத்தகைய பன்முக ஆற்றலாளர்தான் என்.கே. அவர்கள்.

பால்ய வயதில், பதின் வயதுப் பருவத்தில், இளமையின் எழுச்சிக் காலத்தில் என்.கே. அவர்கள் காட்டிய பல்கலை வல்லமையை ஊர்க்காரன் என்னும் வாய்ப்பாலும் வகையாலும் முதலில் மூத்தவர் சொல்லக் கேட்டும் பின் நானே பார்த்தும் வியந்தவனாதலால் என்.கே அவர்களின் வாழ்க்கைச் சரிதம் வரையப்படுவதில் எனக்கு மிகுந்த விருப்பம்.

வியக்கத்தக்க வல்லமையுடைய என்.கே அவர்கள் செயலில் முன் நிற்பார். அச்செயலின் வெற்றியால் வரும் புகழெனில் பின் நிற்பார். இவரது இந்த தன்னடக்கமே நாம் போற்ற வேண்டிய தனிப் பண்பாதலால் இவரது வாழ்க்கைச் சரிதம் வரையப்படுதல் வேண்டுவதாயிற்று.

செயல் என்றால் சிக்கல்கள்
