Most of us enjoy a good detective story Who can forget the exciting story of the tracking down of the assassins of Rajiv Gandhi and the painstaking and brilliant work of police and intelligence officials in hunting for clues, accumulating evidence, testing hypotheses, monitoring suspects. we held our breath as the story unfolded and we learned the outcome.

Professor Colin Humphries of Cambridge University has written a very interesting historical detective exercise of considerable importance on the theme of the star of Bethlehem. Why should this topic be considered of any relevance?Deep inside, most of us would sense the important of frail, weak human beings having meaningful communication with the infinite God who created us and sustains our lives. Various Holy Books or Scriptures are presented to us such communication but is there any means of verifying the validity of such bold claims to beGod's Word?

For books which claim to impinge of secular history, we have an obvious means of cross checking. Are there secular historical records which show correspondence with events recorded in the Holy Book? There have been many such claims to such correspondence as far as the Bible is concerned but one particular and intriguing and important one has recently been brought to our notice. Not just theologians, but scientists, astronomers, historians and lay people from many parts of the world have been fascinated by the star of Bethlehem phenomenon. The Bible claims that the birth of Jesus Christ was accompanied is supernatural events and that the certain signs in the heavens were present to compel attention to a very important event. Wise men from the East were alerted to going on in Palestine and were guided in their travels there by a mysterious star. at least that is what is recorded in the book of Matthew in the Bible. Can these events be verified?Is there compelling external evidence from non Biblical sources that such events did happen?Professor Humphries takes us on curious and exciting trail, accumulation evidence from as far away as Chinese historical tables and presents us with a hypothesis which is well worth our consideration and rethink concerning the accuracy and reliability of ancient Scripture which astronomy claims to offer solutions to our greatest needs.

Considering the great interest in astronomy and astrology here in this part of India, with its great ancient history and culture, it was felt worthwhile to translate this article into the Tamil language (and maybe other Indian languages in the future).
