Description
This week's episode of The Sunday Shakeout features a training talk on universal and fundamental training strategies applicable to all running distances. Believe it or not, the training that you do and the necessary adaptations that you need to train for a track mile versus a road marathon isn't all that different. Training isn't an exact equation and it isn't rocket science. Having patience with a long-term outlook on training that consists of simple fundamentals will make you a faster and less injury-prone runner. If we can recognize that the process of improvement takes months and years (it has taken me two years to improve my mile pr by 90 seconds), then we will become the runners we were meant to become. I hope you enjoy this episode of The Sunday Shakeout.
Summary:
The training principles that the elites do shouldn't be arbitrarily different from what we recreational runners should be doing - higher workload, but similar progression and principles
Be adaptive in your training and don't be afraid to train by effort if you have an "off day"
Be consistent, show up everyday, and don't over analyze everything
Be consistently good enough (think B+) over a long period of time to get better
Don't smash yourself all the time - the pros don't
Always work on the aerobic engine and become an aerobic beast
Train and race a variety of distances and paces - "Variety is the spice of life."
Get the the work in and keep the ball rolling
