This week's episode of The Sunday Shakeout features a talk on cross-training for distance runners, something that us runners despise. That's right! Us runners would rather be running on a beautiful trail, getting in the miles, feeling the wind in our hair, and enjoying nature, rather than staring at a wall for hours while we cross-train and slowly, but surely run out of songs on our Spotify playlists. Yeah, I know the feeling. But, today, I am going to sell you on the idea the cross-training, specifically aerobic cross-training, can be beneficial for distance runners and can move your running to the next level. And this isn't from just the standpoint of maintaining your fitness during injury (which is true), but also from the standpoint of building your endurance, the number one physical skill that us runners need to be working on. Additionally, cross-training can aid in recovery during periods of harder training for lower mileage and less experienced runners.
