I still don’t know the best way out of the messy scenarios my past brought into my present. With each day becoming scarier, the tension got to me, and I may have upset the mayor. My father never let anyone who crossed his path go unpunished. Not even his wife got out, and now it was my turn.

CASSIDY AND JAKE

Our plans for the McGills are starting to take shape. Their camp is in chaos with Cassidy’s face in the game. All we have to do is continue to pour more coal on the flames, then sit back and watch their castle crumple into ruins.

LUCAS

Chapter One

{Natalie}

I yanked the warm hands from my body like it was some clingy reptile. I realized, a bit too late, that I had reacted this awful way toward Lucas. His eyes gazing down at me, were just as confused as mine had been before I blacked out.

I glanced around the eatery, but it was empty. Where was that ghost? Had I conjured her up out of my head? Was she here earlier, or was this some silly mind game? What was Jake up to?

I needed answers to these troubling questions in my confused mind, but first, I had to get off the floor.

Come! Lucas beckoned to me, his voice very calm and soft. I didn’t deserve his warmth. If only he knew what dark side I have… not if Lauren, but when! My mind mocked me. It was true. With Jake up to no good, it was only a matter of ‘when’ before he exposed everything I thought was buried.

I didn’t resist his pull this time; I reached for both his hands and he helped me to my feet.

Are you alright? Lucas asked, concerned lines filling his forehead. I dared not look into his eyes, or I would break into a throaty cry. No, I couldn’t do that right now! I needed to update my father about this. Only, I didn't know what the right facts were anymore.

Where are… where is she? I asked in a croaky voice, barely loud enough for Lucas’s ears.

He didn’t reply, and I had to repeat my question, making sure I added some more volume.

Gone. Who is she? How is she related to you? Why did you react this way seeing her? I have so many questions to ask, Natalie. What is really going on? Lucas asked, his eyes fixed on me. I bowed my head, my eyes tightly shut, as I tried to block out his voice from disturbing my thoughts.
