The Pack - Sins of the Past - Jessica Sorrento

I looked in anguish at the dozens of boxes stacked up in my tiny one bedroom apartment. The clutter was so bad that I had to navigate a maze of brown cardboard just to reach my bed. I'd moved in the day before and unpacking seemed like it was never going to end. I'd spent the day attempting to bust through the boxes but I felt as though my stuff was multiplying when I wasn’t looking. I knew I could have been unpacked in a few short hours had I enlisted the help of friends and family, but it was better they didn’t know I had skipped town. I needed to rip off that band aid quick. Now if only I could conquer the clutter and make this tiny unit a home.

I didn’t want to move away from everything I knew to start my life over, but ever since I found out what I was, I didn’t see any other option. If I stayed, I knew that eventually, I would hurt those closest to me. I couldn’t be that person. Ever since I'd learned the truth I knew this move was inevitable.

I was different from them all. I was an outsider.

I was tired of watching my friends and peers pair up, marry, and start families. I wanted the same, but I was frozen in place in my small town of Black Bear. Elk’s Head wasn’t much bigger, but it was a new start none the less. I wished I’d never found out the truth. I wished that I'd never gotten the internship as a lab assistant at the college. I wished I'd never run a sample of my DNA, trying to locate the marker that made my family, and many other families in Black Bear, different from normal people. If I had just lived simply like everyone else in town, I could have had at least a few more years of hopeful ignorance before I'd be forced to acknowledge the fact that I didn’t fit in.

That was drove the decision to start my life anew. I had no shortage of friends back home and I knew I was loved, but I just couldn’t handle the thought of not being accepted. Of being different. I wanted to blend in and not feel like a half a person in the eyes of my family.

I was sitting on my second hand couch sipping on a hard pear cider with my fluffy slippered feet up on the coffee table when I heard a loud knock at the door. I assumed it was the Chinese takeout I had ordered for lunch about twenty minutes earlier. I grabbed my purse, which had fallen into one of the many boxes stacked around.

I opened the door while fumbling with my purse, trying to extract my small wad of cash from the cluttered mess inside of my handbag. I may have been bright, but my organizational skills left a lot to be desired. But when I lifted my head to greet the delivery boy, I quickly realized that the man in my doorway was not from Panda Kitchen. The lack of my food, combined with the complete lack of clothes clued me into that fact before I realized I knew the person standing in front of me.

Sam? What the hell are you doing here and how did you find me?

He smirked at me before tapping the side of his nose. I followed your scent Liv. How else would I have found you? He sniffed at the air. I’m glad the forest ran so close to the highway. I’m not one for drawing attention.

It was a mark of how sheltered his life was in Black Bear that he didn’t find the idea of a six foot naked man, especially one who was as muscular and handsome as he was, standing on my stoop wouldn’t draw attention. And in Black Bear it would have been true. The town was far enough off the main roads that outsiders rarely visited and clothing had become optional for many of the residents.

Without asking, Sam brushed by me and entered my new home. A tingle of electricity shot through my body as my arm contacted his nude form. I closed the door and turned towards him, trying hard not to stare at his firm ass as he stood tall in my apartment.

He shook his head disapprovingly at the brown boxes. I see the town gossip is correct. My mom told me a friend of hers saw you leaving town with your pickup and it was fully packed. He bumped into a bunch of boxes, steadying the stack when it looked like it would fall over. How do you even own this much stuff?

He attempted to take a seat on my sofa, but I stopped him before he could grace my cushions with his naked body. Wait! Just stay right there for a second.

I moved to a set of boxes only inches away from where he was standing and began to rummage through them. As I searched for something to wear, I couldn’t help but nervously look up at him. I let my eyes track up his muscled legs, to his firm ass, and over his strong back. I wanted him to turn so I could see the rest of him, but no luck on that front. I did however find what I had been looking for.

I pulled out my white terrycloth robe and unfolded it before handing it to Sam. As he turned to take it from me, he momentarily exposed himself. I tried not to look but it was just there like a huge hanging piece of fruit. Nothing I hadn’t seen many times before, but the stupid girl in me still got exited every time I saw his naked body.

Sam sighed and put on the robe, covering up as best he could given his height and the lack of material. He dropped onto my couch, not bothering to check if his privates were still hidden by the robe when he sat down. He patted the worn cushion to his side. Sit. I’m not leaving without answers. I need to know why you left.

Seeing his manly frame wearing my short robe made me giggle. His complete lack of modesty helped to lighten the dark mood that had been following me around since I had found out
