    Synopsis

    MELISSA

Jake and I were starting to share a bond. Maybe I was feeling guilty over nothing, but David’s insecurity about our friendship was getting a bit like a weak link too. I had to deal with that before it became uncontrollable.

    KENDALL

My cousin had wanted nothing but revenge on the Vans, and I had lurked around long enough. It was time to launch my plan. I had created the sudden vacancy in the house, and none was a match when it came to masterminding a plan. Soon, they would realize that in our family, we do not just get mad at faults. We get even.

    FINCH

All I had done years back was hide my son from the public, and now Cassidy wants him. I will fight till the end to have full custody of my son and heir. But this wasn’t the only threat I was facing. I may also be caught in the crossfire between the mayor’s doomed future and the press.

    CHAPTER ONE

    {Melissa}

I am happy the sessions are really as good as the reviews claim, girl! I said to Mandy as I walked through the front door, my heart racing with excitement, listening to her recovery talk.

I should be done in a week or two. Besides, we need a new manager for the house.

That should not concern you, okay? Let Craig do it, I suggested.

Do that, okay? Mandy said, and we ended the call. I stepped into my cozy apartment, and slumped on the couch.

Another strenuous day? David asked, walking into the living room with a smile that could melt anyone’s heart.

Oh my, I didn’t see you there, I said, smiling back at him

I figured. Saw you were on a call. I thought it was better to wait here instead, he said.

Hey, babe! I greeted him with a wave, too tired to go to him. He moved closer instead and cradled me, and I sighed in contentment. When he stepped back, his eyes were fixed on the delicate sparkle around my wrist.

It was the diamond bracelet that Jake had given me that night. My cheeks flushed when I remembered how he insisted I take the piece, a token of our friendship. Why do I feel so guilty right now, though?

It was a gift from Jake, I said, pulling my wrist from him.

David’s jaw dropped, and I could feel the tension grow in the room. He bought you a freaking diamond bracelet! You’ve got to be kidding me! His words were sharp, slicing through the air like a knife.

I sighed, my shoulders slumping as I rolled my eyes. It’s not what you think, David, I said, my voice gentle yet firm. I needed him to understand, to see that there was nothing sinister behind the gift. Jake was expressing his gratitude, nothing more. I think he feels good about the whole incident with the mayor. Men like to buy gifts when in a good mood, you know. I explained. This was a gift of freedom. That kind of thing.

David’s face twisted into a scowl, his eyes narrowing as
