Chapter One

I sat on the terrace, my legs crossed in front of me, a glass of wine in my hands, and Boosh perched on a stool beside me. Together, we stared at the setting sun and I pondered all that had happened to me in the past weeks. The accident at the resort had shaken me up quite a bit but it was nothing compared to the shock I received when I returned to the office and encountered Craig Vans on his knees.

Yeah, you got that right. Rude, obnoxious Craig Vans on his knees! Who would have thought that would ever happen? I think Melissa had it planned out with his mother to surprise me and boy, was I surprised! Well, I'm engaged now and happily, if I may say so. Craig turned around completely and he has been nothing but kind and caring to me.

The following weeks have been the happiest for me and I wish it would remain that way. I had been through a lot in the weeks following Mrs. Janey's death and I deserved some happiness. I turned to Boosh and smiled at the parrot. She had been unusually quiet today and I wondered why. Maybe she missed Melissa?

Melissa had been her caretaker in the days I was in the hospital and they must have bonded somewhat. I had gotten the hang of dressing Boosh up beautifully and today, she was dressed in little black shorts and an orange sweater. Even Mrs. Janey hadn't dressed her up as nicely.

I had some doubts though. What were the odds that Madison and Craig would change their minds so fast and decide that they wanted me in the business? It couldn't possibly have been because of the deal I had struck. No, Janey's had been doing well before I came in so that was not the issue. I sighed and hoped that I was doing the right thing. I loved Craig, yes, but I couldn't even tell if I was ready to get married or not. I didn't know that I was ready to commit myself to someone forever.

My phone rang and I hurried inside to get it. When I saw the caller ID, I smiled widely. It was my fiancé, Craig Vans. It felt good to call him that. My fiancé. It was also good timing, calling when I had just started developing cold feet. The only thing I was super sure of was that I loved the man and being with him made me feel giddy. I picked up on the third ring and said, Hello, baby, how are you doing?

I am fine, my love. Miss me? he teased from his end.

You bet I did!

Well, you can stop missing me now. I'm parked outside your apartment. Please come out. I have a surprise for you.

I squealed in excitement and then covered my mouth with my hands. I was behaving like a love-struck teenager but I didn't care.
