For coffee, you bring me a lot of love.

    Charlie

Hey little brother, I need a job.

I looked up at my sister Becca in surprise.  What?  Oh my god! Did they lay you off at the hotel?  My sister had been a manager at the Greysden Hotel ever since she graduated college. She seemed to love it there, and we all figured she’d be working there until she retired.

No, it’s not for me, it’s for my friend Theresa.

I looked at her suspiciously.  Your college roommate? I didn’t even know you two were still friends. Why don’t you hire her at the hotel?

I don’t have any openings right now.

    Well neither do I.

You’ve been saying for months that you want to add another person on days so you can focus more on your paperwork. Or get someone to help you with the admin side of the business.

It was true.  My coffee shop Bearly Beans had been doing very well, but I was drowning in paperwork.  I had a couple of part-timer staff who worked at the counter, but I was having a hard time keeping up with everything, probably because I loved working the front of the house and hated doing all the administrative crap.

Still, there was something weird about this.  My sister was giving me the same look she used to give me when she would con me out of my Halloween candy when we were kids. As the youngest of four kids, someone was always trying to pull something over on me. But I wasn’t eight years old anymore, so I stared Becca down until she broke.

She looked around to make sure no one was in hearing distance, then leaned over the counter and lowered her voice.

I hadn’t heard from Theresa in a while, and then she called me out of the blue the other day.  It turns out she was in a bad relationship and when she broke it off with him, the guy went crazy.  She had to get a restraining order and even then, he continued to harass her until he attacked her pretty bad and finally went to jail.

Becca looked around again, then continued.

Her attorney suggested she get out of town and get a fresh start somewhere else, far away from the guy in case he gets released, so she called me.  I offered her a job at the hotel, but she said she would feel weird about my being her boss, especially since she’s staying at my house for a while until she decides if she’s going to stay here in Greysden or not. I told her that I was sure that there were a few places hiring downtown. She’s coming to town tonight. I’m not totally sure what kind of job she’s looking for, but I figured I could bring her in tomorrow for coffee and you could casually tell me that you’re looking for help, then we could go from there.

I groaned.  I really don’t like subterfuge Becs, you know this.

"I know, but you really do need more staff, and not only did she work at Coffee Bucks when we were in college, she also majored in accounting.  You can definitely help each other,
