About this ebook

Growing up as the only lion in a family of bears, Bowie always felt a little bit different.

A lion with distinctive bear traits, Bowie has the kind of personality that helps him get along with everyone. It's an asset in his work as a police officer, but it hasn't helped him find his true love. His siblings have all found their mates, but so far no female has piqued his lion's interest.  Just when he's resigned himself to a life of bachelorhood, he gets a job offer that will change his life…

After Becca's father was murdered by hunters, her family was plunged into poverty. It took a long time to dig out and become financially stable again, but the memory of being hungry and scared looms large in her memory all these years later. She's got one goal in life: to make as much money as possible so she never feels vulnerable again. And she's working three jobs to make that happen.

No male is going to distract her from her goals—especially a weirdly cheerful lion who claims that they're mates. So what if her bear agrees that they're mates? She's stronger than her animal side, she'll just have to resist.

Unfortunately, Valentine's Day is coming and Bowie has the whole town on his side. They're not going to rest until the couple gets their happily ever after…

Can this day get any worse?

I rubbed my temple to try to relieve the tension in my head.  I really needed to learn to relax.  I was working too hard, and my body was starting to rebel, thus the headache. And the anxiety.  And the fact that I hadn’t found time to eat a vegetable in three days.  No wonder I felt like crap.

Maybe I should consider letting go of one of my three jobs?  I was thirty-six years old, and I had a nice sum of money tucked away in the bank and various investment accounts.  I didn’t really need to work three jobs anymore, did I?  I knew I couldn’t keep this pace up forever, but whenever I thought about cutting my hours back it made me anxious.

I looked around the cute remodeled Victorian house I was showing today.  Jonah Davis, the sheriff here in Greysden, had referred his newest deputy to me to help him find a house.  Apparently the guy had just moved here from Denver.  We seemed to be getting quite a few Denver transplants here lately. My brother had just mated a human who came from Denver, and she had come to visit another friend who’d moved here from the same place.

The Victorian house was adorable.  Two floors plus a basement, all lovingly remodeled to be period appropriate with dark wood crown moldings and built-in shelves in every room.  It was on an oversize lot with a wrap-around porch, red shutters, and an enormous backyard.  I looked around the kitchen, taking in the newer appliances and subway tile on the floor and backsplash.

It was the perfect place for a family, but even so, I was tempted to buy it myself.  My best friend Theresa had just been reviewing my finances, prepping for helping me with my taxes, and she had encouraged me to invest in some property.  She was right of course, I could really benefit from the tax deduction. It just made me nervous to have too much of my money tied up some place where I couldn’t easily liquify it in an emergency.

We need a better den, my bear grumbled.  She hated living in an apartment.  She wanted a place with a yard where she could lay down in the grass and take a nap in the sun every day.  Lazy bear.  She struggled sharing a body with a workaholic human, that’s for sure.

It looked like this guy wasn’t going to come view the house after all.  No call, no show, which was the kind of thing that really ticked me off.  I’d already worked an early shift at my day job as the events manager at the Greysden Hotel.  I was too exhausted to rattle around in this empty house waiting for the new deputy, especially when I still had some work to do for job number three, my events planning business.

I walked around the house, turning off the lights and making sure that everything was locked up.  I was just finishing up in the dining room when I heard a knock, followed by the distinct sound of a door opening.

Rebecca?  Hello? A deep voice called, Are you still here?  I’m here to look at the house.

My bear suddenly started going crazy, pushing me to go to the foyer to meet my tardy client.
