Chapter One
W here am I? What happened ?
I looked around the stark white hospital room, crinkling my nose at the smell of antiseptic.
You’re OK Claire,
a deep voice answered. You fell down the stairs in front of the house and hit your head on the concrete. You have a concussion.
I shook my head and groaned in pain as red swam before my eyes. I blinked a few times until the shadowy figure over my bed became clear. Male. Handsome. Dark brown eyes. Tousled brown hair. A sexy scruff along the chin.
Who – who are you?
I asked in confusion.
He smiled indulgently, showing a dimple in his left cheek. I felt a warm feeling in my chest.
It’s me Claire. Jonathon. Your fiancée.
Jonathon?
I said in confusion. I thought you were gone.
He reached one large hand over and wrapped it around my smaller one. It was warm and comforting and familiar. I’m here baby. You’re just confused by the head injury.
I smiled and closed my eyes as sleep overtook me again. Good. I’m glad you’re here.
Against my objections, they kept me in the hospital overnight for observation. Jonathon stayed by my bedside the whole time, watching over me. When I awoke in the morning he was slouched down in his chair, head tilted sideways, mouth slightly open as he snored softly. The poor guy looked exhausted.
As I studied him, I flashed back to the day we met.
