    Embracing Vengeance - Sharon Lopez

    chapter 1

Thick gray clouds filled the sky. The cold air chilled my skin through my thin jacket. The coffee helped warm me waking up my senses as a light mist of rain fell around me. I loved the rain, but I wasn’t here for a vacation. I closed my eyes taking a deep breath remembering why I was here in the first place. I won’t let you down. I set my cup down on the table and picked up my pen and notebook.  Six am head to Steamin’ Mugs Café, check.

Hearing a shuffling sound, I shut my notebook and spun around in my seat. A man stood behind me. Water dripped onto the floor from his charcoal gray raincoat. Between his fully zipped jacket and his hood, I was unable to see much of his face. I gave him a once-over and he sized me up, neither of us speaking.

He made his way to the empty seat in front of me and sat down. Sara?

I nodded. So, you must be Connor?

He gave a brief nod. His eyes darted right and then left. He shook his head and then stood. Not here. Follow me.

I picked up my notebook and shoved it in my bag. I bent my head slowly and lifted the leather strap of my duffel over my head letting the oversized bag rest on my left hip. I pulled my backpack up on the opposite shoulder. I followed Connor out of the outside seating area of the café and onto the street. I pulled up my hood as we traveled for a half a block and then stopped in front of a rundown apartment complex.

He opened the door and stood in the doorway when I didn’t follow right away. It’s dryer inside.

I squinted and pursed my lips.

    Connor chuckled. You called me.

I sighed and then took a step toward the door.

We made our way up a creaking flight of stairs and then down a long hallway covered with a thin, red, runner. The closed-up smell of aged carpet filled the air. Connor stopped in front of an apartment and unlocked the door. He opened it and then motioned for me to go inside.

I gasped as he grabbed me from behind, spun me around, and slammed me against the wall.

My widened eyes stared into his glare.

    Who are you?

I opened my mouth to speak, but Connor covered my mouth.

Your story seems far-fetched. Who really sent you here?

I swallowed hard when he uncovered my mouth. I wasn’t lying when I contacted you. I need your help. My eyes filled with tears. You’re my last hope of finding him.

Connor let go of me and took a few steps back. He sighed.

I...I have the money. I unzipped my bag, opening it fully. Other than my notebook, the bag was completely filled with bills.

Connor cocked an eyebrow his stare was fixed on the contents of my bag.

I took my notebook out of the bag and then tossed the bag onto the floor. It...it’s all there.

    What’s that?

I held up my backpack. Just some clothes and toiletries.

Not the backpack. That. He motioned to my notebook with his chin.

I clutched the book to my chest. My notes.

Connor studied me. Before I knew what was happening, he had me pinned against the wall and was prying the book from my hands. His eyes scanned over the contents of the page. I felt his body stiffen against mine. Shit.

I squeezed my eyes shut. He knew everything now. My heart pounded in my chest as I wondered what he would do with this new information.

It’s all true? He really did that to your family?

I opened my eyes. My shoulders sagged and my bottom lip trembled.

I tiptoed through the front door. I had come home from my business trip early. I wanted to surprise Tyler and Liam. It was ten O’clock so I wasn’t surprised when the house was quiet and dark. I left my luggage by the front door and made my way down the hall. I heard the shower running so I decided to check in on little Liam first.

    I blinked back the tears.

Connor handed me back my notebook. He
