    Chapter 1

As I headed to school, a crispness filled the surrounding air. White puffs left my mouth as I sang along to the latest song. I zipped up my jacket. I didn’t mind the walk. With school a block away, it makes no sense to drive just to show off. I’m not one of those guys that get their parents to buy them things. I work hard for everything I have. A few dollars in the bank, a decent car, a fully restored 1968 Ford Mustang. I do all right for myself. I just don’t feel the need to flaunt it. I don’t play sports, but I’m not on the bully’s radar either. In the middle, I get along with everyone. Yeah, that’s me.

I took my usual path alongside the parking lot. When I reached the front of the school, I paused at the freshly replaced poster that was hung on the column. In big bold black letters, it read missing. Below it, was a picture of Mary Shilton. The whole situation was sad. She has been missing since right before summer break. Mary’s parents, frustrated with police, hung up posters all over town hoping someone knew something. I sighed and shook my head before continuing on.

I entered the hallway and headed straight for my locker. Once there, I turned to stare up the hallway and then down. She’s late. Katie Richards, a senior at Forest Lake High School, agreed to this seven-thirty meet up. Yesterday, when she stopped me outside after school, she said there was a question she had about our chemistry homework. She asked to meet me to go over it before class. I pulled my phone out of my pocket. Just as I thought, seven thirty-five. Five minutes may not seem like much to the average person. To Katie, being late, no matter if by seconds or minutes, would be a devastation. She is chronically punctual. I saw Katie’s best friend Liz by her locker. I strolled over to ask about Katie’s tardiness.

    Have you heard from Katie?

Liz’s forehead creased. I thought she was with you?

I held out my phone, showing her the time was seven thirty-five. She never showed.

Liz reached into her locker. Pulling out her phone, she swiped and tapped on the screen. She held it up to her ear. After a few rings, she ended the call. I’ll try her mom, Liz repeated the previous steps and then waited. She ended the call, biting her bottom lip. That’s odd. Mrs. Richards always answers.

I turned on my heel. Tell Katie I was here when you talk to her, I called behind me as I headed back to my locker. I gathered my books and went to the library where I had my study period.

I signed in at the librarian’s desk. Picking a seat in the middle of the room, I set my books down. That is when Mrs. Shafer, the librarian, abruptly interrupted.

    Shaun?

    What’s up, Mrs. Shafer?

She held out a slip of paper. I have never known you to get into trouble.

My eyes opened wide as I took the paper. In trouble? I studied the page. It instructed me to head to Principal Harold’s office. I promise you I have nothing to do with whatever this I waved the paper in the air. Is.

Mrs. Shafer’s smile was genuine. She gave me a brief nod before leaving toward her book cart.

I could not fathom why I was being called to the office, so I shrugged and headed to the destination.

I opened the door to a bustle of activity. I glanced around, taking in the scene. Several men in suits were standing, sitting, and talking in a normally vacant space.

    Shaun?

I turned to find my parent’s studying me.

I rubbed the back of my neck. What is going on?

My dad crossed his arms over his chest. That’s what I would like to know.

Shaun. Mr. and Mrs. Knotchkiss. Thank you for coming. Principal Harold ushered us toward his office. I lingered a few seconds as I watched Liz leaving the office in tears.

What has Shaun done? my dad asked, sitting in one of three chairs set in front of the Principals’ desk.

    "No, Shaun
