What the hell is that?
I slammed on the brakes as something came barreling up the highway towards my car. Fortunately, no one was behind me on this long deserted stretch of road. I was on my way to visit my daughter who’d moved away from Denver last month, and she lived out in the middle of nowhere as far as I could tell. I hadn’t seen another car for several miles.
I peered through the windshield. It looked like...a wolf. At least I thought it was a wolf, it looked too big and furry to be a dog and I didn’t think it was a coyote. Not that I knew what a real coyote looked like, I’d only seen one in those old cartoons with the Road Runner. I’d grown up in the city and hadn’t really been around wildlife before. But I was pretty sure it was a wolf.
The animal continued barreling towards me, its gaze fixed firmly in my direction. I shivered. I eased off the brakes and slowly moved my car to the other side of the road, but the wolf adjusted its trajectory to match mine and kept coming right towards me.
Was it stalking me or something? Maybe it was crazy. Usually, animals tried to stay away from moving vehicles. Did wolves get rabies? I was pretty sure rabies made animals go crazy.
I braked again and came to a complete stop as the wolf got closer, not wanting to hit the poor thing.
To my horror the wolf leapt up on the hood of my car, making my car shake under its weight. It was huge, gray in coloring, and kind of shaggy. The wolf stood looking at me through the windshield, its eyes intense and eerily human looking. The animal growled deep in its throat, loud enough that the car seemed to shake. It moved closer to the windshield, its nails scratching against the paint, and I screamed in terror. It looked like it wanted to come right through the windshield and eat me!
Instinctively I threw the car in reverse and slammed on the gas. I wrenched the steering wheel to the side so that the car turned sharply, knocking the wolf off the hood. I heard it whine as it hit the asphalt, but I shifted into drive and slammed on the accelerator, eager to get away.
My heart was racing as I sped down the road. In the rearview mirror I saw the wolf stagger to its feet and start chasing my car, but fortunately I was faster and left him in my dust.
What the hell had just happened? I’d never heard about animals doing this before.
I got to the city limits Greysden, my daughter’s new town, about ten minutes later. It was a cute little town. As I drove down the main street, I could see all the shops were decorated for Christmas, and the old-fashioned looking streetlights were covered in candy cane stripes and topped with alternating wire Christmas trees and candy cane decorations. A huge and festively decorated Christmas tree was set up in the town square, with a whole Santa display nearby. I smiled. Christmas was always my favorite holiday.
My daughter Marissa had talked at length about how much she loved this town. She had moved to Greysden only a month ago and to my complete shock she’d met a guy and fallen in love within a couple of weeks. They were planning to get married in
