The playroom at Dauntless Daycare was complete chaos, and the owner, Maeve Lowe, couldn’t have been happier. Toddler-sized dragons whizzed overhead while a pixie made colorful flowers grow out of the carpet. A circle of yetis had started a fairly impressive braid train, while the three and four-year old witches levitated wooden blocks to build a child-sized castle.

Do you need a hand? Angela Wright hollered over the din. The curvy brunette bear shifter ducked beneath a low-flying dragon, the movement especially awkward in the child-sized chair she was sitting in.

I got this. Maeve grinned over a table covered in crayon streaks. She pulled her short, blonde hair into a stubby ponytail and stretched her plump arms behind her back. I said I would take you somewhere nice for lunch, and what’s nicer than here? She jauntily waved a soggy peanut butter and jelly sandwich at her friend.

Dauntless Daycare was just a small storefront in a strip mall, its former life as a Chinese food restaurant painfully obvious on hot days when the entire place smelled of General Tso’s chicken. But Maeve didn’t care. This place was hers. It was 1,000 square feet of meticulously organized bookshelves, napping mats, and toy boxes that the kids transformed into fabulous chaos on a daily basis.

"I’m loving this haute cuisine, but it’s pretty clear you don’t have time for a break. How about we reschedule lunch, and I’ll make sure the kids in this half of the room –Angela gestured to the right— don’t kill themselves while you tackle that half." She pointed off to the left where a young yeti was climbing the walls, leaving tiny claw marks in his wake.

Absolutely not. I have everything under control. Maeve rolled up her sleeves. Today was the busiest the daycare center for supernaturals had been in months. Eight supernatural toddlers—more than double the usual amount of kids—showed up, with no warning from their parents. It was just under the legal limit; any more children and she’d have to hire outside help. But Maeve wasn’t about to turn anybody away, let alone back away from a challenge.

Maeve let out a long breath before springing into action. Okay, my little dragons, that’s enough flying time. Shift back so we can all read a story together. She clapped her hands loudly, bringing the room to a brief standstill. If everybody puts their toys away before the big hand gets to twelve –she pointed up at the clock on the wall where the big hand was a whole four minutes away from reaching twelve— we can read everybody’s favorite story before naptime. The pages of Big Bear, Little Town were nearly worn to shreds, and Maeve was dead sick of reading the story, but the kids absolutely adored it. That book was Maeve’s ace in the hole, and she didn’t mind using it one bit.

A cheetah shifter zipped around the room, picking up toy blocks with her mouth, uncaring about the saliva and bite marks she left behind. The yetis created small portals, sending jumbles of toys cascading back onto their
