About this ebook

An adventurous married couple, determined to have a baby. A gorgeous surrogate thrust into a world of danger. Will these three be able to protect their growing family from a monstrous threat?

Millie Foss has it all…almost. She's a bear shifter, an heiress with over a billion dollars to her name, and she's drop dead gorgeous. But the one thing she wants—to have a baby—has always been out of reach.  When she finally decides to employ a surrogate to have the child she's unable to bear, she worries about everything that might go wrong. The only thing she's not prepared for is falling in love.

Oliver Foss is an attorney gunning for a promotion to the top. When his wife, Millie, asks him to consider using a surrogate to bear their child, he's thrilled. Once he meets the woman who will carry his child, though, Oliver's entire world shifts. He can't keep his eyes off this new woman in his life, and he can't help noticing that his wife wants her too.

Alex Castle is an experienced surrogate who dreams of sharing her unique pastry recipes with the world. When she's hired to carry Millie and Oliver Foss's child, she's more than happy to help them build their family. Millie Foss threw the pregnancy test into the wastebasket harder than she meant to, sending the plastic strip ricocheting around the small steel cylinder. She washed her hands, allowing a single, furious tear to escape before marshaling every last drop of composure from her reserves. This wasn't the first time she’d seen the words ‘Not Pregnant’ glare up at her from a strip of plastic, and it wasn’t likely to be the last. She gingerly wiped away the teardrop, careful not to smudge her makeup. She looked at herself in the mirror and faked a big, bright smile, her chocolate eyes gleaming. Millie fussed with her long, blonde hair for a minute, making sure every meticulously blow dried strand was in place. She had to look good. After all, she was the boss.

Outside the staff bathroom was a whirlwind of activity, her bookstore, Shelf Indulgent Books, livelier than Millie had seen it in months. She’d spent nearly a year negotiating terms with a local coven to bespell all of her inventory, and the effect was stunning. All of her books were neatly arranged on shelves, inert, until the right customer showed up. The enchantment gave each book the ability to determine which patrons would love them, and once the right person walked in, the books that person would most enjoy transformed. Those books became the size of a child’s palm and the front and back covers folded up into wings. The books looked like colorful butterflies, and would flit over to the shopper. People were delighted to see the exact novel they were searching for or the cookbook they didn’t know they needed, joyfully fluttering around them. The customers called them ‘bookterflies’, a portmanteau so wonderfully cheesy that Millie took it up as the official nomenclature immediately. A reader could extend their open palm to a bookterfly and it would gently land before turning back into a book, allowing further perusal. With a simple tap of the cover, the book would transform back into a bookterfly. It wasn’t for everybody, but the sheer delight of being welcomed by tiny flying books and the ease of finding the perfect novel made Millie’s customer base extremely loyal. After hours, the books on magic would sparkle and glow, the cooking books gave off the scent of perfectly-prepared pastries, and the romance books nested together, often producing offspring novels that combined both parent plots in unusual ways.

The smell of paper wafted through the air life a comforting hug, second only to the strong scent of coffee coming from the cafe. Millie had installed the cafe almost as an afterthought, mostly because she wanted an easy way to get coffee during her day, and partially because the shop had a small kitchen in the back she wasn't interested in getting rid of. It was just a small counter with a few coffee machines and a pastry display case next to a handful of round tables and chairs. There was no way she could have known how popular the cafe would get, especially with her new baker, Alex Castle.

Millie wanted to drape herself dramatically across some piece of furniture and let out a breathy sigh like some 50's movie star whenever she thought of Alex. Alex was a petite brunette, delicately pale with porcelain features. She didn’t take anybody’s shit, baked like a southern grandmother, and was effortlessly gorgeous in just torn jeans and a T-shirt. Alex was exactly Millie's kind of girl.

Hey sweetie. Oliver Foss planted a kiss on Millie's lips. How's it going? Oliver was a little over six feet tall, with pale skin, rich brown eyes, and jet black hair. He wore a dark suit with a navy tie over a white shirt, the bespoke clothing perfectly displaying his muscled form.

The test was negative. Millie blurted, her signature move. I guess we'll have to keep trying.

Sorry babe. Oliver wrapped his arms around her and she could feel her muscles relax. So you're saying I have to make love to my beautiful wife over and over again? Oliver let out an exaggerated sigh.

It's a terrible job, I know, but this is what you signed up for. Millie pulled Ollie close. She inhaled his scent, loving how he always smelled like soap, paper, and something overwhelmingly male. Unlike Oliver and Alex, who were both human, Millie was a bear shifter, able to change her form at will and that came with incredibly heightened senses. Her shifter nose could pick him out of a crowd in an instant.

Seriously, though. I know how disappointed you must be. He intertwined his fingers with hers. I have to get back to work soon, but I should have enough time for a coffee. He nodded at the cafe. I'm buying.

Ooo, big spender. Millie wrapped her arm around Oliver's waist, draping his arm over her shoulders. She felt protected, safe, even when she was denied the thing she wanted most in the world.

Alex was working the counter in jeans and a plain black T-shirt that was covered in flour. She smiled as Millie and Oliver approached. One Americano?

Millie grinned at how Alex remembered her favorite drink. Yes, please. And a very large macchiato for this one. She nodded at Oliver.

Coming right up! Alex beamed as she brought the hissing machines to life, putting together the drinks with the ease of a professional.

Millie turned to Oliver, whispering. Ollie, that's her.

Oliver's mouth formed a perfect O and his eyebrows raised. He'd been scolded for being terrible at whispering many times before, so Millie knew he wouldn’t dare try until the cappuccino machines were going at full roar. She’s gorgeous. He mouthed at Millie.

And an absolute savant at baking. Millie whispered. She bit
