A quick note from the author

This story involves fighting a disease called Knope’s Syndrome. For the curious or otherwise worried, please know that this is not a real ailment and was made up for this story only.

The main hall of the Natural History Museum was bustling with tuxedos and ball gowns, expensive watches and dazzling diamonds, everybody breathlessly anticipating the start of the charity bachelor auction. The gorgeous sight was lost on Leo Barnes as he maneuvered his way through the crowd, trying to ignore how his stomach churned with nerves. He flicked a strand of shaggy blond hair away from his eyes, spotting a few skeletal pterodactyls looming down from the ceiling over the museum’s massive Mesozoic exhibit. They leered down at him like birds of prey, just waiting to pick at the carcass of his inevitable failure. He felt eyes boring into his back, reminding him that he wasn’t one of us. New money was frowned upon in this crowd, and lotto winners like Leo were practically pariahs. He subtly wiped his sweating palms on his trousers and looked around the room, wondering if anyone would notice if he snuck out the back door.

Leo! Isabell Ogg scampered in his direction, and Leo held back a groan. There was no escape now. The petite blonde ran the MacDougal Institute, which was researching treatments for Knope's Syndrome. Nearly a year ago, Leo had agreed to be auctioned off at this multi-charity event, with the proceeds from his auction going to MacDougal Institute. It had seemed like such an easy thing to agree to, at the time. Isabell was dressed in a fluffy rose gown with white fishnet stockings and a huge, gauzy white hat, and she teetered on strappy high heels. "I’ve been looking everywhere for you. Her posh British accent added a tone of authority to her words. She reached up to straighten Leo’s bowtie while her eyes roamed around the room. There are some very rich women here tonight. We need you looking your best."

Leo forced a smile. He hated dressing up, and his bespoke tuxedo was much less comfortable than his preferred jeans and a T-shirt, but he had acquiesced in the name of charity. He’d spent months preparing for and dreading this bachelor auction with equal vigor. A lifetime of playing basketball with friends had kept Leo in decent shape, but just the thought of being put up on a stage and having a room full of the city’s wealthiest judge his appearance really made him sweat. Leo had hired a personal trainer who’d put him through the workout of his life, every day, for six whole months. It was grueling work, but he had to admit he was a fan of the results; his muscles were more defined, and he’d finally earned a six-pack. But, man, did he miss pizza.

Isabell licked her finger and reached up to straighten a tress of Leo’s dirty-blond hair. It was just long enough to be unruly, coming out in waves that would turn to curls if he let it grow any further. Leo struggled not to pull away, hating the feeling of Isabell’s spit in his hair. Now when you’re on stage, be sure to smile. Isabell’s face displayed a pageant-ready smile as if Leo might be unfamiliar with the concept. Walk around a little bit so the bidders can see that tush of yours.

Isabell! Leo’s cheeks grew warm as a blush overtook his face.

She circled him, her blue eyes sweeping calculatingly over every inch of his form. If we want to find a cure for Knope's Syndrome, we need all the funding we can get.

I would have been happy just to write you a check. Leo’s gaze fell to his shoes. I hate over-the-top events like this.

"You will be writing a check. All bachelors auctioned off match the donation by the person who bid on them. But we’re not just raising funds; we’re raising awareness. I bet a lot of people will know about the MacDougal Institute by the end of this event, and the donations will come rolling in. Isabell’s eyes sparkled and she leaned in conspiratorially. I shouldn’t be telling you this, but we’re so close. My team should have a breakthrough any day now. The institute needs this money. Don’t be getting shy up there. I need you to strut."

Leo resisted the urge to flee. I’ll try my best. He swallowed hard. Leo knew he could just walk away, pretend to have to tend to some imagined emergency and leave all this stress behind. He pictured his late wife, still gorgeous despite everything Knope’s had done to her, and he knew in his bones that he had to face his fears. This is for her, he thought, looking up past the pterodactyls. Even though it’s too late, we’ll find a cure for her.

Isabell’s gaze wandered the room. I’m going to do a quick lap and talk you up. She nodded at a circle of young blondes draped in diamonds. You just stand there and look handsome. I don’t want the cancer charities to get all the cash again this year. She fussed with the gauzy overhang of her hat before striding over toward the dazzling light reflecting off millions of dollars’ worth of rocks.

Leo shifted his weight uncomfortably, scanning the room for a familiar face. His gleaming black dress shoes pinched his feet, and he silently cursed Prada for being unable to make a shoe that didn’t make his toes feel like they were being crushed in a vice. A tall redhead wobbled by on five-inch stiletto heels, and Leo decided his shoes were just fine after all.

Leo! A strong hand clapped on his shoulder, and Leo turned around. I thought that was you. Oliver Foss, also dressed in a classic black tuxedo, grinned.

Ollie! Leo let out a sigh of relief. He’d met Oliver at a handful of functions for Knope's Syndrome over the years, and his down-to-earth personality was always welcome at the snooty affairs. Good to see you. Are you being auctioned off, too?

Nope. I’m married. He held up his left hand, displaying a shining wedding band on his ring finger. So, I’m off the hook. Oliver shook his head. "Thank goodness. I would be a bundle of nerves if I had to stand up there in front of everybody and be judged." He wrinkled his nose.

    Thanks, Leo dryly replied.

Shit. I didn’t mean— Oliver started.

Leo laughed, a low rumble that bubbled up from his
