    Dyed Thoughts - C.M. Cahill

    Foreword

Before you read any further, I must give you this warning. This is just a collection of several short stories told from the point of view of Nate aka Scraps. He is definitely one of my favorite characters and I have enjoyed writing the world through his eyes. But this is just a companion to go with Tragic Hope.

If you have not read Tragic Hope yet, I highly recommend you do first. This collection contains spoilers to those that have not read it yet and could be very confusing for you. Tragic Hope is now available for purchase online.

    Grave side manners

    ––––––––

Excessive pounding woke me up, followed by the unmistakable bellowing of my older brother Brian.  Nate! Get up and answer the damn phone. It’s your boyfriend, he laughed and I heard the sound of the phone being dropped onto the floor. I knew it was Mas on the phone. Brian never seemed to tire of that jab, despite knowing that I’ve had several girlfriends. Brian and I have a mixed relationship. Now-a-days it only seems we get along if he’s in a good mood (which is rare) or if money is involved.

I grudgingly slid out from under my sheet and opened my bedroom door just enough to grab the phone before shutting it. Hey, I grumbled into the receiver.

Hey man. I’m on my way to your house.

Why? What’s up? I yawned. I blinked my eyes hard into focus to look at the clock. It read 10:25. Normally I would've been up by now, but since we didn’t have school today (thanks to some teacher thing) I stayed up till like four playing video games.

It’s Lily. That woke me up quick. Dude, she’s a wreck. Momma-C called me to check on her and I found her on the bathroom floor crying in her bathrobe.

The image of Lily in just her bathrobe popped into my mind. I quickly shook it away. Not that it wasn’t something I wouldn’t mind looking at. I think Lily is beautiful but she’s like off limits. She’s practically Mason’s sister so that is a big no-no to even go there.

Why? I finally asked once the inappropriate thought evaporated.

Don’t you remember what today is? Mas asked. But before I had a chance to even think, he continued on. It’s the one year anniversary of her dad’s death.

Oh man, I said as my heart sank. What can I do to help? I had already started rummaging for some clothes to put on.

Just be ready in like five minutes. She’s at her dad’s grave waiting for us. But before you jump on me for leaving her, she asked me to come and get you so you could hang with us.

Ok, see you in a few then bro. I hung up and started to get my clothes on. I wish I had time to shower but Lily needed me. My poor Lily-beans. I knew what she was going through unfortunately.

My dad died around five years ago. He decided it was a good idea to drive drunk. It resulted in a nasty single car accident. He may have survived if
