About this ebook

In the dramatic finale to the second season of "Ian's Gang", a young girl is left fighting for her life after being struck by a drunk driver. It's the kind of senseless tragedy that happens every day - but this time it's different. Ian Kidd

I grew up in South Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to South Australia at the age of sixteen. My writing ambitions began as a child, when I became notorious in my class for writing short horror stories that would probably have them calling in the child psychologists nowadays! I have written everything from non-fiction ebooks to published short fiction, and served as script editor on two proposed horror feature film scripts for an LA based director. In terms of fiction I have written dozens of novellas, including more than 70 stories in the "Ian's Gang" sci-fi adventure series. I still live in Queensland, where I work as a freelance writer.

    CHAPTER ONE

Trev McDonald sat at his desk, a feeble and decidedly unconvincing smile on his face. The two people facing the haggard-looking thirty-something, the Harris', were the dopiest couple he'd ever laid eyes on. She looked half-dead, with ridiculous glasses and hair, and the man looked like a reject from a zombie B movie.

We want a house, Jo Harris smiled sweetly.

Joey Harris nodded. Yeah. A nice one.

Trev's smile became more forced. I've shown you sixteen houses from our brochure, and you didn't like any of them. They were all 'nice', so if you could be a little more specific in your housing requirements.

Jo looked dazed. Excuse me? she said.

What do you want, exactly? Trev was rapidly losing patience with these idiots.

Jo smiled. Oh, I see. We want a house.

Joey smiled. Yeah. A nice one.

Trev groaned. He needed a drink.

Later, Trev was facing his boss.

You haven't sold one house in the past quarter, was the opening line.

We're in a recession, Trev told him patiently. The Aeon invasion didn't help. The market's shit.

If you don't buck up your ideas, sonny Jim, you're gonna find yourself without a job, the boss waved a finger at him disapprovingly.

Trev sighed. He needed a drink.

I want lots of meat - chicken, pork, lamb, sausages, Ian ordered. Plenty of milk - make sure it's in date.

I'll have the same as Ian, Matthew spoke up, but swap the milk for beer.

Right, Cody clicked the pen off and read down the list. I've got everyone's orders for food for the next week. Do I get a bag? Or a truck even?

You are a b - Philip began, but Ian hit him.

Watch it, Ian warned. The bag's are in the kitchen. Make sure you get everyone's, Code, it's the first time you've done it -

    Done what? Philip joked.

Dear me, your level of wit is low this month, Philip, Matthew remarked. The lobotomy worked, then?

Cut it out, you two, Ian said wearily.

I'll be off, then, Cody chirped, skipping cheerfully from the room.

I can smell you from here, Philip called after her.

    Ian groaned.

Trev McDonald drowned his sorrows in a beer glass at the local pub. He looked glumly up at the barman. Same again, Bill.

Hey, come on Trev, you've had five, Bill chided him. I thought you were driving.

Shut up, Trev told him glumly. When I want your opinion, I'll ask for it. Just give me another bloody drink, will you?

No, Bill replied firmly, you've had enough. Get lost.

Trev stared at him angrily. You what?

I said, get lost, Bill returned. Go on, get out - and if you get in that car, I'm calling the law.

Go ahead, you bloody snitch, Trev grumbled, and staggered drunkenly from the bar. It's a shit pub anyway, can't think why I come here. Beer tastes like gnats' piss, he lurched out of the pub.

After a moment or two, Bill heard the car start up, and considered picking up the phone, but rejected the notion. If that idiot Trev killed himself, it was his problem.

Cody began walking cheerfully back from the supermarket. It
