Ian Kidd

I grew up in South Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to South Australia at the age of sixteen. My writing ambitions began as a child, when I became notorious in my class for writing short horror stories that would probably have them calling in the child psychologists nowadays! I have written everything from non-fiction ebooks to published short fiction, and served as script editor on two proposed horror feature film scripts for an LA based director. In terms of fiction I have written dozens of novellas, including more than 70 stories in the "Ian's Gang" sci-fi adventure series. I still live in Queensland, where I work as a freelance writer.

    CHAPTER ONE

They were naked under the bed covers.

I love you, Rebecca sat atop Kathryn, their bodies pressed tightly together. I've always loved you.

I know, Kathryn smiled. I love you, too.

    They kissed.

Slowly, luxuriously, they began to make love...

    ... Rebecca awoke.

The glorious feeling of sensuality, warmth and love generated by the dream carried over for only a few seconds in reality, dying as Rebecca felt that her bed was cold and empty.

She was alone. As usual. She was alone, and always would be alone. Kathryn lay in her own bed just across the corridor in Ian's Gang Base, but she might as well have been a million miles away.

Rebecca curled up in bed, cuddling the bedclothes to her, trying to recapture the happiness she had felt in the dream, but it didn't work. She just felt lonely and afraid. She had lots of new friends, and Kathryn was her dearest friend of all... but it just wasn't enough. Not anymore.

Rebecca looked at the bedside clock. 5:00am. Rebecca screwed her eyes tightly shut, and tried to go back to sleep. She just prayed she wouldn't dream.

    Becca! Becca!

Rebecca woke with a start to find Kathryn standing next to her bed. She almost thought she was dreaming again, but for the concern and worry on Kathryn's face. Rebecca wiped the sleep from her eyes. Kathryn... what is it? What's wrong?

    The gang's gone! Kathryn yelled.

Rebecca frowned, still trying to wake fully, not understanding. What do you mean 'gone'?

As in 'not here', Kathryn shouted. Also as in 'buggered off'!

Rebecca climbed out of bed, still in her nightdress. What time is it?

11, Kathryn replied. I got up about ten minutes ago - and they've all gone!

Rebecca padded out of her room, Kathryn hot on her heels. Maybe they just went shopping.

Since when does it take all of us to go shopping? Kathryn wanted to know.

Rebecca checked the lounge. Empty. The kitchen. Empty. Maybe they got an urgent call-out, a new case or something.

Well, why wouldn't they wake us, then? Kathryn demanded. Since when did we stop being a part of Ian's Gang?

Rebecca checked the bedrooms. All empty, with beds that didn't look like they'd been slept in. They've gone, she concluded.

Yeah, Kathryn nodded. Now - like, tell me something I don't know.

Rebecca looked at her watch. 2:00am. She shook it. It had
