Ian Kidd

I grew up in South Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to South Australia at the age of sixteen. My writing ambitions began as a child, when I became notorious in my class for writing short horror stories that would probably have them calling in the child psychologists nowadays! I have written everything from non-fiction ebooks to published short fiction, and served as script editor on two proposed horror feature film scripts for an LA based director. In terms of fiction I have written dozens of novellas, including more than 70 stories in the "Ian's Gang" sci-fi adventure series. I still live in Queensland, where I work as a freelance writer.

    CHAPTER ONE

Ryan MacArthur was in a foul mood. As co-owner/manager, with his wife Lynn, of the Regent Caravan Park in the small town of Shoalhaven, on the outskirts of North Yorkshire, he had to put up with a fair share of drop-outs, reprobates, jerks and weirdoes. Usually, he took it in his stride, with good humour, considering it part of the job. But the guy in Van 4 was really trying his patience. He wasn't just a weirdo, a whinger, or a cretin, he was - Jesus! - a yuppie. And as far as Ryan MacArthur was concerned, things couldn't have been worse if Old Nick himself had turned up demanding accommodation for the evening. After arriving two hours later than he'd said he would on the phone, complaining about everything from the outside colour of the caravan, the bed size (too BIG!) and the lack of colouring on the soap, now the bloody idiot was complaining that he couldn't find the flush button on the toilet! That in itself would have infuriated Ryan, but what pushed him over the edge was that the yuppie git hadn't come in to complain from his caravan, he'd actually had the gall to call him from the van on his mobile phone, rather than come out himself.

Ryan hurried out to the van, and saw with some surprise that the yuppie, Alexander Fleming, was outside the van. Found how to flush the toilet yet, mate?

Er - yes, Fleming looked shamefaced, but -

But? Ryan had had enough. He was going to tell this selfish, obnoxious prat exactly what he thought of him, and if he left in a huff, so be it. He wasn't getting a refund, mind. Ever since you arrived, you have done nothing but moan, whinge, whine and complain. You are, without doubt, the biggest, most irritating imbecile I have ever met. You, Mr Fleming, and I'm sorry if this offends you - are a jerk.

    Finished? Fleming inquired.

Ryan took a deep breath. I suppose.

I'd like to make a complaint, said Fleming, about this stuff all over my caravan.

What stu - Ryan broke off. The outside of Fleming's caravan was covered in a sticky, milky goo-like substance. Where the hell did this come from? he turned to look at Fleming accusingly. What you been up to mate?

Don't look at me, Fleming objected. I've been in about an hour, and when I came out all that crap was over it.
