The Assessis Empire continues its domination of the galaxy, including Earth.

Separated from the rest of Ian's Gang, Ian Williams and Cody Frid are hiding out in Maltby, but when Maltby's "Controller", the sadistic former hit-man known only as the BloodButcher, realises they are still in town, he launches a campaign of terror to flush them out.

Five innocent people will be executed per day until Ian and Cody either give themselves up - or are given up.

"Slaughter" continues the dramatic story arc which began in "The End" and continued in "Conflict of Interests".

I grew up in South Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to South Australia at the age of sixteen. My writing ambitions began as a child, when I became notorious in my class for writing short horror stories that would probably have them calling in the child psychologists nowadays! I have written everything from non-fiction ebooks to published short fiction, and served as script editor on two proposed horror feature film scripts for an LA based director. In terms of fiction I have written dozens of novellas, including more than 70 stories in the "Ian's Gang" sci-fi adventure series. I still live in Queensland, where I work as a freelance writer.

CHAPTER ONE

The night sky shone with stars and the park was dark and deserted as teenagers Ian Williams and Cody Frid lay under a tree, drinking wine and staring at the stars.

We'll have to be getting back soon, Ian commented.

Ssh, Cody hushed him. Don't ruin it. We haven't been gone that long.

We're taking a risk being here at all, Ian told her. Assessis soldiers spot us, and we're dead meat.

"Oh, Ian, Cody pulled a face. I was just starting to feel relaxed, and you go and spoil it."

Sorry.

'S'okay, Cody shook her head. I just had to get out of the house, that's all. We've been cooped up there for nearly a month, not even allowed to go bloody shopping.

I know, I know.

They lay there for a few more minutes in silence, and then Cody sat up. Come on, she said. We'd better be getting back. Arnold'll be getting worried.

What happened to feeling relaxed? Ian teased.

They left the park and began walking home in the darkness, down the back streets, carrying the picnic basket between them. For those few, quiet moments, they could almost believe the invasion had never happened and all was right with the world.

It was an illusion that could not last long.

Halt! A single word froze Ian and Cody in their tracks. Turn around - slowly!

Hearts beating, Ian and Cody turned to face two figures, guns raised, the blue/white striped uniforms of the Assessis Empire unmistakable even in the darkness.

Put down the basket and put your hands up!

Ian and Cody did so.

H-how can we help you, officer? Cody asked shakily.

We were just having a picnic, Ian said quickly. We weren't doing anything wrong.

You were out after curfew, they were clones, they had to be. The cold, emotionless, clipped tones could surely not have belonged to any non-conditioned individual.
