Ian Kidd

I grew up in South Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to South Australia at the age of sixteen. My writing ambitions began as a child, when I became notorious in my class for writing short horror stories that would probably have them calling in the child psychologists nowadays! I have written everything from non-fiction ebooks to published short fiction, and served as script editor on two proposed horror feature film scripts for an LA based director. In terms of fiction I have written dozens of novellas, including more than 70 stories in the "Ian's Gang" sci-fi adventure series. I still live in Queensland, where I work as a freelance writer.

    CHAPTER ONE

    The planet Matadon.

In the Palace, King William Inkamaya and his young wife Laura were preparing to leave and set foot in their Class 1 spacecraft.

I have been to a Universal Conference before, Laura was saying. William looked at her. As a guard, she admitted.

William kissed her. This time, you're one of the dignitaries. One of the celebrities, even.

Laura looked at him coyly. You love it, don't you?

William beamed. So do you, don't deny it. Laura grinned.

The King and his Princess departed the Palace, escorted to the Royal craft by a procession of guards.

Earth's second attempt at a Universal Conference, William noted. Let's hope it goes better than the first, eh? Don't much fancy being blown up again. Once was quite enough, thank you.

It'll be fine, Laura assured. "For one thing, that CLEFA lot don't exist anymore. For another, they'll make doubly - nay, tripley - sure nothing goes wrong this time."

William and Laura started up the ramp to the craft. I hope you're right, William noted.

Course I am, Laura beamed. You know the saying - lightning never strikes twice!

In a dark motel room in Maltby, a ginger-haired young man named Paul French was opening a violin case to reveal a telescopic rifle within. Paul went over and sat by the open window, pointing the rifle out of it, finger poised over the trigger as he practised aiming the weapon. Perfect, Paul purred. Come in, Mr Inkamaya, your time is up!

It was morning in Ian's Gang Base, and the gang, as always, were gathered in the lounge drinking coffee.

    Conference today, Sean noted.

Ah, yes, Matthew rubbed his hands together. Another year, another terrorist bombing...

    I've been thinking, Ian said.

Ian, we've warned you about that, Matthew reproved.

Yes, you know what happened last time, Wilburts mocked.

Matthew looked at him. Good one, Wilberforce.

Thank you, sir, Wilburts smiled. As always, your approval alone makes my life worth living.

    Matthew frowned.

Six is a rather small gang, Ian began. Maybe we -

No no no no no! Matthew threw his hands up.

You don't even know what I'm going to say yet, Ian said defensively.

Don't I? Matthew sneered. You're going to suggest you draft in some army tossers like last time.

    Hey! Sean objected.

Ian, it doesn't work, Matthew continued regardless. They don't last five minutes. Look at Kristen - if you wanna dig him up, that is. Look at Tracey - ditto. And that other tosser - Sh - Sam, or something.

I'm gonna punch him in a minute, Sean said grimly.

I know what you're saying, Ian agreed. But -

Enough, Matthew cut in. I'm tired of having to get used to idiots, only to see 'em bumped off ten minutes later. No new people!

Oh, okay, Ian sighed. Maybe you're right.

I usually am, Matthew admitted airily.

    The doorbell rang.

Ian glanced out of the window. It's Commander Hawkins.

Oh, no, Matthew groaned. Quick - everyone hide!

    Matthew, Ian began.

Pretend to be asleep, Matthew urged. Or deaf. Or dead. Or all three!

    Ian buzzed Hawkins in.

What the hell did you do that for? Matthew demanded. "Now we have to talk to him!"

The lift came up, and Hawkins stepped out.

    Commander, Ian nodded.

    Moron, Matthew nodded.

    Gang, Hawkins nodded.

    Matthew, Wilburts nodded.

    Wilberforce, Matthew nodded.

    John boy, Wilburts nodded.

Quit it, the pair of you, Ian snapped. He
