I grew up in South Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to South Australia at the age of sixteen. My writing ambitions began as a child, when I became notorious in my class for writing short horror stories that would probably have them calling in the child psychologists nowadays! I have written everything from non-fiction ebooks to published short fiction, and served as script editor on two proposed horror feature film scripts for an LA based director. In terms of fiction I have written dozens of novellas, including more than 70 stories in the "Ian's Gang" sci-fi adventure series. I still live in Queensland, where I work as a freelance writer.

CHAPTER ONE

John and I could hardly wait to see the freakshow. It was the talk of the town, the fun-fair with the extra something to draw in the punters. Ma had forbidden me to go - twelve was too young to see such things, she insisted - but my brother John, every bit the rebellious teenager, had promised to smuggle me out and take me along. I could hardly wait. Soon it would be time, time to see the freaks...

The increasingly ramshackle Ian's Gang van rambled along the country lane toward the village of Ismilton, in the Lake District. Inside the van, Banix was at the wheel, while the rest of the gang sat in the back, Charlotte in particular trying to persuade the increasingly quiet Dean to communicate.

Looking forward to seeing your folks? Charlotte asked brightly.

That drew a response. My dad, you mean, Dean corrected her grumpily.

Alright, your dad, Charlotte agreed tiredly.

"She isn't my mother, and don't you forget it, Dean growled. Any of you."

Charlotte sighed.

Oh, what fun, Matthew groaned. Some holiday this is going to be, with ol' misery guts whining on at every given opportunity, just because Daddy's got himself some mid-life action.

Hey! Dean objected.

Matthew, Ian said warningly.

Charlotte successfully managed to repress a smirk. "He's got a point, Dean, pain me though it does to admit it. This holiday was your idea."

Aye, Dean agreed sourly, and not one of my better ones.

Well, it's a bit bleedin' late to turn back now! Matthew exclaimed.

He's right, Charlotte nodded.

"Again," Matthew pointed out.

You wanted to come here, Charlotte reasoned. "You wanted to see your sister, and your father. You wanted to make things up with him. Don't back out now."
