Ian Kidd

I grew up in South Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to South Australia at the age of sixteen. My writing ambitions began as a child, when I became notorious in my class for writing short horror stories that would probably have them calling in the child psychologists nowadays! I have written everything from non-fiction ebooks to published short fiction, and served as script editor on two proposed horror feature film scripts for an LA based director. In terms of fiction I have written dozens of novellas, including more than 70 stories in the "Ian's Gang" sci-fi adventure series. I still live in Queensland, where I work as a freelance writer.

    CHAPTER ONE

    Maltby.

It was moving day for Ian's Gang. When the gang had re-formed in their old stomping grounds, they had, understandably, chosen their old Base to be their new Base. Unfortunately, the recent terrorist attack had all but destroyed the place, and rebuilding deemed unwise. The place was falling down, and, after much angst, the gang had decided to move. The gang's new Base was an enormous white building, formerly government offices, which had been converted to living quarters.

Ian and Philip had been out discussing the move with Commander Wilburts, and now they entered their new lounge to find Matthew, Steve, Rebecca and Kathryn flopped out in armchairs. Banix was out shopping for supplies.

There were piles of full boxes strewn all over the floor.

Well, look who's here! Steve grumbled. Where the hell were you when the humping needed to be done?

I'd rephrase that if I were you, Matthew smirked.

    Steve groaned.

    Sorry, Ian apologised.

Philip dived into an armchair beside Kathryn, grinning at her. Miss me? he winked.

Like a hole in the head, Kathryn commented. It was not exactly a secret that, in the three months since Rebecca and Kathryn had joined Ian's Gang, Philip had developed a complete, all-consuming, obsessive, and utterly unrequited crush on Kathryn. It was also widely understood - by everyone but Philip - that he didn't stand a chance in Hell.

There was a knock on the door. Unlike their previous Base, the lounge was on the ground floor and led straight outside, so there was no lift or stairs.

    It's open, Ian called.

Great security system we got here, Philip commented.

    Aw, shut up, Ian sniped.

The door opened and a young man with blonde hair and an army uniform entered, with a tentative smile. Hi, guys.

Oh, hi Chris, Ian smiled. Lt. Chris Naucer was a newcomer in town, and already Wilburts' No.1 man. What can we do for you?

Well - er - we live just across the road and well, we're having a barbecue tonight, and we thought we'd invite you, Chris smiled.

Ian shrugged. Why not? What time?

Any time after six. We're No.12. See you, Chris raised a hand and turned to go.

Oh, Chris? Philip called. Chris paused. Throw another shrimp on thebarbie for us, would you?

    Er - sure, Chris frowned,
