Ian Kidd

I grew up in South Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to South Australia at the age of sixteen. My writing ambitions began as a child, when I became notorious in my class for writing short horror stories that would probably have them calling in the child psychologists nowadays! I have written everything from non-fiction ebooks to published short fiction, and served as script editor on two proposed horror feature film scripts for an LA based director. In terms of fiction I have written dozens of novellas, including more than 70 stories in the "Ian's Gang" sci-fi adventure series. I still live in Queensland, where I work as a freelance writer.

    CHAPTER ONE

We stand here on a historic day. From this day forth, Earth will forever be an equal and acknowledged presence in the galactic community, and I personally, cannot tell you how proud and overwhelmed I feel to have been one of the people responsible for this assimilation project. This is the dawn of a new age, of new understanding and -

    Matt?

Matthew Parker pressed the remote control and paused the image of the King of Zakaria, Ian Williams, in mid-speech. The effect was surprising; Ian looked like a startled fish, mouth half-open. He saw himself on the screen, sitting behind, smirking broadly, allowing his friend his moment of glory as Ian's Gang finally achieved their ultimate aim of entering Earth into the Universal Structure. He forced himself out of his reverie, looking up from his desk in his office in Zerroff Palace to look at the newcomer. Yes Robert, what is it?

The King of Zakaria is on the line, waiting, Robert told him. His tone indicated contempt, and Matthew couldn't blame him.

Right, I'll take it, thanks Robert, Matthew snapped off the four year old video of Ian in his moment of glory, and replaced it with a live one. Physically, the intervening years had changed Ian not one iota; inwardly was another matter.

Took your time, Ian snapped. I've been waiting nearly two minutes. But then, courtesy never was your strong point, was it, Matthew?

What can I do for you, your Majesty? Matthew replied with nothing but respect. When he was this polite with someone, he clearly didn't like them very much.

I thought we had agreed you would lift your ban on imported Zakarian liquor? Ian demanded.

    I did, Matthew replied smoothly.

For five days! Ian screeched. Then you banned them again! Is trade policy just another of the things you clearly have no control over in your position as supposed ruler of Zerroff?

Hardly, there was an edge to Matthew's voice now. I ordered the re-ban.

    Why?

It seems you're the one with no control over your planet's policies, Matthew said coldly. Either that, or you've a very short memory.

    Meaning?

Meaning, your Highness, Matthew continued, that I originally lifted the ban on Zakarian liquor imports because you agreed to lift your ban on Zerroffian Hassish imports - which you implemented first, as I recall.

I banned Hassish from sale because it is a dangerously addictive drug, Ian began.

Hassish is no more dangerous than Paracetemol! Matthew shouted.

    New studies -

    Ordered by you, Matthew interrupted.

New studies reveal it contains more addictive chemicals than previously believed.

I had my scientists check your new studies, Matthew snapped. They confirmed they're about as credible as the Warren Commission. In any case, you agreed to lift that ban if I lifted the ban on liquor. You made no moves to do that, so I reapplied the ban. Your word clearly means nothing anymore, Ian.

I had every intention of honouring my word, Ian smiled, but as always, your impatience got the better of you. Moves were being implemented to lift the ban on Hassish. Now, however, I am afraid I must put a stop to them.

You won't have to, because we both know there weren't any! Matthew lost his temper. And as for patience, I'm fast losing it with you. You're a liar, Ian - a liar and a fraud. I don't know what happened to you to make you like this, but I'm damned if I see if I have to put up with it.

Your insults throw shame on you, your Kingdom and your planet, Ian spat. "In response to this outrage, I am banning all exports from Zerroff from entering this planet."

You can't do that! Matthew roared.

Don't be silly, of course I can - I'm King, Ian smiled sweetly. I am, of course, willing to change my mind - on one condition.

    Oh?

A public apology and admission of your ill-manners, Ian smirked.

Matthew growled. "You can ride to Hell in a sleigh, your Majesty, before I apologise to you, publically or privately. I once considered
