Ian Kidd

I grew up in South Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to South Australia at the age of sixteen. My writing ambitions began as a child, when I became notorious in my class for writing short horror stories that would probably have them calling in the child psychologists nowadays! I have written everything from non-fiction ebooks to published short fiction, and served as script editor on two proposed horror feature film scripts for an LA based director. In terms of fiction I have written dozens of novellas, including more than 70 stories in the "Ian's Gang" sci-fi adventure series. I still live in Queensland, where I work as a freelance writer.

    CHAPTER ONE

Private Jamieson leaned back in her hard chair and yawned. She'd only been in the army two weeks (and she shouldn't really be in anyway, she chuckled) and already she was bored. She'd joined up (or bluffed her way in, whichever way you wanted to look at it) for a bit of action and while she obviously did not want a full-scale war or anything like that, she'd expected more than this.

Seconded to the A.O.D.S project (Alien Observation and Defence Service) she now found herself monitoring space radar (one of the most boring jobs imaginable) in the loneliest part of the massive new A.O.D.S base in the most desolate area of the Yorkshire Moors.

Young, blonde and very beautiful, Jamieson wanted to know what the point of it was. The radar couldn't pick up anything past Pluto, the Spiridon Sector were all friendly (except Assessis, but if they tried to launch even the smallest warship, four other planets would be on their back straight away) and no one, NO ONE, knew of any other alien life.

Oh well, Jamieson decided, time for the fifteenth cop of coffee that day.

The door opened and handsome, dark-haired young Lieutenant Munro, personal protégé of Commander Wilburts, A.O.D.S' leader, came in. How's it going, Jamieson? he inquired.

Wonderful, Jamieson yawned, casting an appraising eye over his youthful good looks. Run off my feet.

Hah hah, Munro frowned. Just checking - hey, what's this? he leaned in close to the radar screen.

What? Jamieson forced herself over. The radar screen was covered in strange white lines. Oh, damn computers, she hit the monitor, expecting the lines to disappear. They didn't.

You're supposed to be monitoring this, Jamieson, Munro said severely.

Hey, cool down, Jamieson sipped her black coffee. It's just a malfunction.

I don't think so, Munro shook his head worriedly. I think I'd better call Commander Wilburts.

Whatever it is, we can't take any chances, Wilburts, a tall, slightly greying but fit man in his mid forties, decided. Contact the spaceport. I want a shuttle up there a.s.a.p.

    Yes, Commander, Munro concurred.

And get in touch with Ian's Gang.

Why the gang? Munro wanted to know.

They're the nearest intergalactic heroes around here, Wilburts reminded him. "I want to work as closely with them as possible, and this seems a fine place to start. We don't know what it is up there. Our astronauts are still unfamiliar with some of
