Ian Kidd

I grew up in South Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to South Australia at the age of sixteen. My writing ambitions began as a child, when I became notorious in my class for writing short horror stories that would probably have them calling in the child psychologists nowadays! I have written everything from non-fiction ebooks to published short fiction, and served as script editor on two proposed horror feature film scripts for an LA based director. In terms of fiction I have written dozens of novellas, including more than 70 stories in the "Ian's Gang" sci-fi adventure series. I still live in Queensland, where I work as a freelance writer.

    CHAPTER ONE

Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned.

How long has it been since your last confession?

I don't know...uhh...a couple of months, I guess. Twelve year old Liam Nicholls sat in the darkened confessional of the Morton Clavell Catholic Church. He couldn't see the elderly Father Matthews through the grille, but he knew he was there.

    Continue, Matthews said softly.

Well, Father, I've been having thoughts...about the girls at school, Liam said nervously.

Impure thoughts? Matthews pressed on implacably, but non-judgementally.

Yes, Father. And... Liam paused, unsure whether to continue.

And? Matthews' gentle, caring tone urged him on.

And - I've been touching myself....down there, you know. There was silence behind the grille for so long that Liam became nervous. Father?

Yes? Was it Liam's imagination or was Father Matthews' tone harsher than it had been before?"

    Am I forgiven? Liam inquired.

Forgiven? Of course you're not forgiven, you dirty little fucking sinner! Liam's surprise at Father Matthews' using the forbidden F word was compounded when the priest ripped the grille down and lunged at him.

Liam struggled. Father...what are you doing?!

Giving you the punishment you deserve, my lad, that's what, Matthews' got his hands around the young boy's throat and began to throttle. You won't touch yourself again after this, I'll wager.

The life was squeezed from Liam Nicholls' body.

John Walker entered room 16 in Morton Clavell Primary School to find Class 3b already waiting for him. Ah, good, John smiled. You're all here. Okay, turn your text books to page sixty-eight and tell me the name of the first poem. None of the class of sixteen eight year old boys and girls moved. Go on, John urged. Sixteen pairs of young eyes appeared to bore right through him. Is this some kind of joke? John inquired. "What, is there a whoopee cushion on my seat or
