As the school bell rang for the end of the lunch break, my friends decided to sneak off and be late for class.

It was October 10, 1996, and, aged six, I’d only been at school a few months.

Usually, I’d be off with my mischievous mates, but that day I decided to head to the classroom alone, stopping at a bubbler for a drink.

That’s when I smelt petrol.
