Ian Kidd

I grew up in South Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to South Australia at the age of sixteen. My writing ambitions began as a child, when I became notorious in my class for writing short horror stories that would probably have them calling in the child psychologists nowadays! I have written everything from non-fiction ebooks to published short fiction, and served as script editor on two proposed horror feature film scripts for an LA based director. In terms of fiction I have written dozens of novellas, including more than 70 stories in the "Ian's Gang" sci-fi adventure series. I still live in Queensland, where I work as a freelance writer.

    CHAPTER ONE

It was a bikie club, on the rough end of Maltby.

Stu Rivers made his way from the bar, through the throng of leathers and the overpowering stench of festering sweat, out into the back street. It was only 6pm, but the night was already dark, the air cool and crisp. Stu breathed in the night air, and made his way to his bike.

The club door opened and another biker, Freddie McGuire, came out. You leaving, Stu?

Yeah, I guess, Stu nodded, straddling his bike.

    Bit early, innit? Freddie asked.

P'raps. But I'd better be getting back, or the missus'll - Stu stopped. What's that noise? He turned.

Down a side alley came a noise like the crackling of electricity, and a brief flash of bright, white light.

Stu got off his bike. What the hell was that?

I dunno, Stu. Freddie and Stu moved closer, but backed off slightly as smoke poured from the alley, thick and heavy. I reckon summut’s exploded, like.

    Look! Stu pointed.

In the smoke, they could just make out a figure. A man, striding toward them.

Freddie and Sam backed away further as the figure emerged from the smoke.

It was a man, about six feet tall, stocky but not fat, dressed in bikie leathers. He wore black sunglasses, and a knuckle-duster on each hand. There was a zig-zag line across his neck, like someone had once tried to slit his throat. Evenin', fellas. The newcomer lit up a cigarette and puffed on it, grinning at them. Stu - I'll need yer bike.

Stu blinked. Do I know you?

"Come on, Stu. It's been a long time, but it ain't been that long." He took off his sunglasses and winked at him.
