I grew up in South Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to South Australia at the age of sixteen. My writing ambitions began as a child, when I became notorious in my class for writing short horror stories that would probably have them calling in the child psychologists nowadays! I have written everything from non-fiction ebooks to published short fiction, and served as script editor on two proposed horror feature film scripts for an LA based director. In terms of fiction I have written dozens of novellas, including more than 70 stories in the "Ian's Gang" sci-fi adventure series. I still live in Queensland, where I work as a freelance writer.

CHAPTER ONE

The mortar shell hit Ian's Gang Base like a rocket.

There was a shattering CRACK!, and the building collapsed inward.

The van that had been parked unnoticed for several hours across from the Base, suddenly revved it's engine and took off at high speed.

Rebecca Hall had been walking back from the shops when she heard the blast. Unnerved more than her inner sixth sense than by the actual noise itself, she began to run, turning the corner to see Ian's Gang Base a shattered wreck of its former self.

Smoke began to pour out of the side of the collapsing building, and Rebecca saw flames from within. The part of the building most affected was what had used to be the lounge. Where all the gang had been sitting before she left.

Kathryn! Rebecca dropped the shopping and raced toward the Base. The fire inside was burning strongly now. She could imagine it eating at the body of her best friend in the whole world. She tried to get in through the front door, opening it. Chunks of masonry fell, and almost hit her.

Don't do it, love! a big, burly man in a postal worker's uniform pulled at her. It's suicide!

But Kathryn's in there! Rebecca yelled, hysteria threatening to overtake her. "Good Christ, they're all in there!"

Getting yourself killed won't help them now, the man dragged her further away as more of the building began to collapse in on itself. I don't know if anything will.

Rebecca stared at the collapsing Base in shocked terror.

Commander Wilburts slammed the phone down and stormed out of his office into the main area of the Army Base. Attention! he roared. I've just had a report of a bombing in the High Street. It sounds like Ian's Gang Base. I want three squadrons down there in two minutes, along with the Fire Brigade.

I'll oversee the operation, sir, Joe Brewton volunteered.

"No, Lieutenant, I’ll oversee the operation, Wilburts told him. You stay here and man the Base. Well, what are you people waiting for? He clapped his hands together. Move!"
