Ian Kidd

I grew up in South Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to South Australia at the age of sixteen. My writing ambitions began as a child, when I became notorious in my class for writing short horror stories that would probably have them calling in the child psychologists nowadays! I have written everything from non-fiction ebooks to published short fiction, and served as script editor on two proposed horror feature film scripts for an LA based director. In terms of fiction I have written dozens of novellas, including more than 70 stories in the "Ian's Gang" sci-fi adventure series. I still live in Queensland, where I work as a freelance writer.

    CHAPTER ONE

The small town of Bottom, nestled in the heart of the English countryside, around twenty kilometres from Maltby, was bathed in the comforting blackness of night. Its population was at peace, deep in slumber. Most of them were.

Thirteen year old Rynn Scott couldn't sleep. She rolled over in her bed in her room in No. 14 Rolling Street, a small run-down old bungalow, and looked at the electric clock on her bedside cabinet: 2:00am.

Rynn sighed. She was so excited about tomorrow, but if she didn't get some sleep, she would be so tired by tomorrow night, she wouldn't be in any fit state to enjoy it, and she didn't want that.

Her first date! And with Dave Cook, spunk of the universe! She was so excited, she was fit to burst. She'd never been on a date before, never been kissed. That would change by tomorrow night - both things. She'd get a snog out of Dave if she had to jump on him.

The gate outside banged, probably with the wind. Rynn chose to ignore it, rolling over and burying her face in a pillow. For a few minutes, there was blissful silence.

    Then her bedroom window shattered.

Rynn sat up. There was someone in the room with her. A man, whose face she couldn't quite see, rose from the floor.

Something in his hand glittered. A knife.

    A big knife.

    Rynn screamed.

Her bedroom door crashed open, and the light came on. Her father, Roger, a big, burly fireman in his forties, and her elder brother Blake, a muscled seventeen year old clutching a baseball bat, rushed in.

Rynn saw the man's face for the first time, and screamed. It wasn't a face at all. It was a disgusting, melting mass of white skin and puss. No eyes, nose or other features were discernible. It was like a wax doll someone had put a light to.

"What the fuck?!" Roger advanced on the intruder.

Daddy, look out, he has a knife! Rynn warned.

Too late. The thing stuck the knife in Roger's stomach and gutted him. Roger fell to the floor, blood and innards falling out all around him. The
