I grew up in South Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to South Australia at the age of sixteen. My writing ambitions began as a child, when I became notorious in my class for writing short horror stories that would probably have them calling in the child psychologists nowadays! I have written everything from non-fiction ebooks to published short fiction, and served as script editor on two proposed horror feature film scripts for an LA based director. In terms of fiction I have written dozens of novellas, including more than 70 stories in the "Ian's Gang" sci-fi adventure series. I still live in Queensland, where I work as a freelance writer.

CHAPTER ONE

It was only two in the afternoon, yet the sky was dark, threatening storm clouds hovering overhead, as Commander Wilburts pulled up at the crime scene in his jeep.

It was a rubbish skip, same as the last two. Other army officers, and the local Maltby pathologist, Dr. Elizabeth Stamp, were already there. As he approached, Wilburts saw the pale, naked figure, in plastic sheets as the others had been.

Dr. Stamp, Wilburts nodded formally.

Commander, Elizabeth didn't look up or otherwise acknowledge him in the slightest, too engrossed in her work.

Wilburts found that strangely arousing, but thought better of mentioning it. Well?

I'm fine, thank you, Commander, Elizabeth stonewalled him.

Wilburts gritted his teeth. Dedication was one thing, downright flippancy was quite another. You know what I mean. Is it the same guy?

I suppose.

Wilburts sighed. You can't do any better than that?

In time, perhaps, Elizabeth looked at him. This is just a preliminary exam. I'll do the actual autopsy in my lab, not a sodding rubbish tip.

An educated guess, then, Wilburts nodded, forcing a smile.
