Ian Kidd

I grew up in South Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to South Australia at the age of sixteen. My writing ambitions began as a child, when I became notorious in my class for writing short horror stories that would probably have them calling in the child psychologists nowadays! I have written everything from non-fiction ebooks to published short fiction, and served as script editor on two proposed horror feature film scripts for an LA based director. In terms of fiction I have written dozens of novellas, including more than 70 stories in the "Ian's Gang" sci-fi adventure series. I still live in Queensland, where I work as a freelance writer.

    CHAPTER ONE

He was running for his life. James Conner knew it, even as he pelted his way down the country estate, not daring to look back. He swung himself over the fence, barely even registering the pain as the barbed wire dug into his flesh, yanking his clothes free and running. Only when he saw the comforting glow of Ismilton's lights below did he dare risk a single glance back.

It was on top of the hill. A lone wolf, its yellow eyes glowing brightly in the darkness. Then it lifted its head up to the moon and howled out the howl of the damned. The sound spurred James on and he knew he could not stop running. He entered the village, and breathed a sigh of relief at the sight of a reassuringly familiar red telephone box. James reached it and slammed the door shut once inside, panting with exhaustion and relief. Sanctuary - and a lifeline. James picked up the telephone and dialled.

Hello, this is Henry Jones. We're not in right now, but if you'd like to leave a message after the beep -

Answering machine. James swore inwardly. After the machine finished its message and gave the prompt of the beep, James started gabbling frantically. "Henry, it's James. It's true, Henry, it's all true! We were right! Oh, but it's so much more than that. So much worse than that. You won't believe it, Henry. You won't believe it when I tell you what I've seen. I'm not sure I even believe it myself. It -"

Glass smashed as the wolf threw itself at the telephone box door. James screamed, dropping the phone. The wolf threw itself at the door again, more glass shattering. And again it came, snarling ferociously. James cowered in the corner of the box, terrified beyond reason. The wolf threw itself at the door
