Ian Kidd

I grew up in South Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to South Australia at the age of sixteen. My writing ambitions began as a child, when I became notorious in my class for writing short horror stories that would probably have them calling in the child psychologists nowadays! I have written everything from non-fiction ebooks to published short fiction, and served as script editor on two proposed horror feature film scripts for an LA based director. In terms of fiction I have written dozens of novellas, including more than 70 stories in the "Ian's Gang" sci-fi adventure series. I still live in Queensland, where I work as a freelance writer.

    CHAPTER ONE

It could have been a bar like any other bar, on any other planet.

Teague wished it was. Any bar, any planet, would have been better than this. Tru'fa sucks! he roared, loudly and drunkenly.

The scruffy, rough-looking patrons of the grimy, old-fashioned bar looked at him. The looks were less than pleasant. Their attire made them look like gold prospectors from the 19th century.

The barkeep, Sam Jones, an overweight middle-aged man with a magnificent moustache, came over to him. I think you've had enough for one evening, Teague, he said disdainfully. Don't you?

No, Teague slobbered. "I'm still standing, and I can still remember which planet I'm on. I haven't had anywhere near enough yet."

Well, you've had all you're going to get from me, Jones told him.

You bloody scab! Teague scowled. Typical bleedin' Assessian. 'Come to the 'new' Assessis'! he roared. 'Make your fortune!' What a pile of horse shit!

The discontented rumblings from the rest of the bar were growing louder.

I think it's time you were going, Teague, Jones told him.

Really? Teague snarled. And what if I don't want to? Who's going to make me? You?

Teague was thrown onto the hard ground outside Jones' Bar. Jones returned inside. Teague could hear the laughter of the others inside. He picked himself up. Aye, well, your beer tastes like cat's piss anyway! he yelled. He hurried quickly around the corner into the alleyway that led to his apartment, in case Jones had actually heard him.

Teague hurried home, stumbling and cursing, occasionally falling onto his knees. He steadied himself when he heard a noise behind him. He turned. There was someone in the shadows. Who's that? he cried. What do you want?

There was no reply, just a low hissing noise.

Teague didn't like the sound of that, so he began backing away. Whatever it was continued following him, until it stepped out of the shadows into a pool
