About this ebook

An expedition to the supposedly dead world of Assessis yields some surprising discoveries. The planet is now free of radiation and ripe for colonisation - and beneath the surface is a nuclear fall-out shelter come political prison, one of whom is still alive and whose existence will result in major ramifications for the entire universe... and Ian Williams in particular.

Ian Kidd

I grew up in South Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to South Australia at the age of sixteen. My writing ambitions began as a child, when I became notorious in my class for writing short horror stories that would probably have them calling in the child psychologists nowadays! I have written everything from non-fiction ebooks to published short fiction, and served as script editor on two proposed horror feature film scripts for an LA based director. In terms of fiction I have written dozens of novellas, including more than 70 stories in the "Ian's Gang" sci-fi adventure series. I still live in Queensland, where I work as a freelance writer.

    CHAPTER ONE

We're getting visual link-up now, sir, the aide reported.

William Inkamaya, King of Matadon, nodded. Show me.

The big screen in the War Room of the Matadon Palace lit up. At first, William couldn't see anything; then he made out the sand, the scorching sunlight, the wind-swept location that could only be the Assessian desert.

A girl - no older than twenty - with short blonde hair, pretty features and a Matadonian military uniform, stepped into view. Your Majesty, she acknowledged.

Lieutenant Barlow, William nodded his respect. Your report, please.

As you may have gathered from our lack of protective suits, there is no longer any radioactive activity on any threatening level on Assessis, Laura reported.

William blinked. You're trying to tell me the planet is habitable again? So soon?

    Yes, sir, Laura confirmed.

That's the shortest radiation span from any nuclear blast I've ever heard of, William spluttered.

With respect, sir, it was no nuclear device we've ever heard of, Laura reminded him. The Aeons' weapons were, after all, billions of years in front of ours, technologically speaking. The Aeons wanted 'living space', remember. No doubt the radiation was expected to clear quick, so the device would wipe out the indigenous population and they could move in.

So, in your opinion, William pondered his words, do you believe the planet is suitable for colonisation?

Yes, sir, Laura nodded. I'd say it was ripe for it.

I'd better get onto Zerroff, Zakaria and Earth, William said. This will certainly help their over-population problems.

Yes, sir, Laura looked at him expectantly.

William came to a quick decision. Okay then, Lieutenant Barlow. Well done. Now get your team back here. He allowed her a brief - very Royal - smile. Your champagne's on ice, Lieutenant.

Laura grinned, suddenly looking even younger than she was. Thank you, sir. Look forward to seeing you soon. She saluted, and the screen went blank.

You too, Commander, William smiled. You too.

Laura turned to her troops, a band of Matadonian soldiers, most
