I grew up in South Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to South Australia at the age of sixteen. My writing ambitions began as a child, when I became notorious in my class for writing short horror stories that would probably have them calling in the child psychologists nowadays! I have written everything from non-fiction ebooks to published short fiction, and served as script editor on two proposed horror feature film scripts for an LA based director. In terms of fiction I have written dozens of novellas, including more than 70 stories in the "Ian's Gang" sci-fi adventure series. I still live in Queensland, where I work as a freelance writer.

CHAPTER ONE

Mark Robertson watched with appreciation as Cathy Markham, No.1 Official Girl Of His Dreams (i.e. she didn't know he existed) stripped down to her bathing suit and leapt into the sea. Mark plucked up his courage and climbed down to get a closer look. Cathy was, Mark reflected, about the only decent thing in the small Cornish town of Mousehole. Mark always thought that was an exceptionally stupid name for a town. He watched Cathy swimming, the sun gleaming off her tanned shoulders, and practically drooled. Sooner or later (hopefully sooner but probably later) he would ask her out...and...and...

…Mark's little fantasies were shredded by a blood-curdling scream. Cathy's scream.

Mark leapt up, surveying the coast line for his dream girl. Thoughts flickered through his mind, some filled with genuine concern for Cathy's safety, some imagining her undying gratitude when he rescued her... Mark ran to the edge of the sea, looking. Finally, quite far out, he saw her. Cathy was writhing frantically in the water, screaming.

It's okay! Mark yelled, pulling off his trousers. I'm coming, Cathy! I'll save you!

No! Cathy shrieked. Mark - no!

Mark stopped. His body turned rigid.

Cathy's screams were cut short as her body was ripped in two by what looked like a large spike.

Mark's eyes widened in horror, scarcely able to believe what he was witnessing.

Cathy's lifeless body was thrown away, her guts and entrails trailing into the sea.

Mark began to scream.

And the sea turned red.

Further down the harbour, Rick Brecker, a handsome, young-looking forty-something who fancied himself the stud of Mousehole, was out on his speedboat, the somewhat arrogantly named The Love Boat, when he heard Mark's hysterical screeches. Rick looked out across the ocean to see what was causing the young boy's hysterics. Fear tingled down Rick's spine as he saw something floating on reddened water.

Apprehensive as to what he would find, but no coward, Rick powered
