About this ebook
In the small English village of Stoney Mead, something is turning ordinary people into monsters.
Ian Kidd
I grew up in South Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to South Australia at the age of sixteen. My writing ambitions began as a child, when I became notorious in my class for writing short horror stories that would probably have them calling in the child psychologists nowadays! I have written everything from non-fiction ebooks to published short fiction, and served as script editor on two proposed horror feature film scripts for an LA based director. In terms of fiction I have written dozens of novellas, including more than 70 stories in the "Ian's Gang" sci-fi adventure series. I still live in Queensland, where I work as a freelance writer.

CHAPTER ONE
Stoney Mead General Hospital, England. Psychiatric Ward.
"Doctor Jennings! Doctor Jennings!"
Fred Jennings heard the nurse screaming out his name from all the way down the corridor. As he headed out of his office, to see her pelting toward him, he was seized by a feeling of dread; a feeling something terrible had happened, or was about to happen.
Nurse Richards reached him, breathing heavily. Doctor Jennings -
What is it, Carol?
Fred asked, slightly irritated yet concerned.
It's Carpenter,
Richards told him.
Fred sighed. Bill Carpenter had been brought in the day before, wide-eyed, rambling, and almost incoherent. He kept going on and on about a flower attacking him or something equally absurd. They'd kept him in overnight for observation, and by the look of it, his condition had not improved. What's he done now?
"He's... he's changed," Carol gasped.
I'm sorry?
Fred demanded, puzzled. What do you mean?
He - he - oh, come see for yourself!
Then Carol was pulling at his arm, dragging him down the corridor. Fred allowed her to do so, then as they neared the patient's room, he began to hear what was presumably Carpenter roaring in shrieking in apparent agony.
What on Earth -
Fred began.
There!
Carol swung the door open, gesticulating wildly. See for yourself!
Fred's eyes lit upon what was on the bed, and his jaw dropped in stunned disbelief and horror.
Bill Carpenter lay on the bed, thrashing and convulsing, madly shrieking in pain. At least, it looked like Bill Carpenter; some of it, anyway. The patient's body was twisted, contorted, bent into an obscene parody of the human form, his limbs twisting around beyond all sense. As Fred watched in sheer nauseated terror, Bill's legs simply... dropped off. Then something began protruding, rupturing out of Bill's back. As his
