Hadrian Blackthorne, the newest resident of Dunstan Drive, throws a lavish party as a way of introducing himself to his neighbours. It comes as no surprise that he's caught the eye of the mostly bored housewives who are giddy with excitement over their sexy, mysterious new neighbour. As he mingles among his guests, making an effort to personally introduce himself to each one of them, he finds himself smitten with Astrid, his next door neighbour. From that moment on he decides he wants nothing more than to get her in his bed. He formally introduces himself to her and while they're busy making small talk, the band strikes up one of Astrid's favourite  90's tunes. Hadrian asks her to dance and the two of them end up on the dance floor together.  Hadrian barely finishes dancing with her other when he finds himself face to face with Astrid's less than pleased, dead-beat, estranged husband, James. A near physical altercation ensues and James storms out of the party in anger. A reluctant Astrid soon follows and goes home to face him.

In the days that follow, Hadrian tries to befriend Astrid. Astrid doesn't show him any interest, but fate soon intervenes.

Chapter One

Astrid's knees buckled beneath her. "Oh God, noooo...nooo... Frantically she shook her head, falling against the hardness of Hadrian's chest as he took her into his arms, warming her with his embrace. Her body quivered in shock. Tears welled up in her eyes as she felt the ripple of his muscular back beneath her fingers. I need to see him, she said, looking up at Hadrian. I need to see him..."

I'm not sure that's such a good idea...

"I said I need to see him..." Astrid demanded as she tried to wriggle out of his grip. But he held her immovable in his embrace, comforting her, protecting her from what she might see. Please, I need to see him...  Her voice broke before she could finish her sentence, the dam inside her bursting wide open. Her body went limp against Hadrian's. I have to make sure he's okay... she continued, feeling her body weakening.

On the one hand she didn't really love James anymore, but she'd created a child with him. As lackadaisical as he'd been as a father this past year, he was still the other half of their son. And for the lack of time he'd spent with Chase, the boy still thought the world of his father. I'm going out there and there's nothing you can do to stop me, she said firmly, finally breaking away from Hadrian, rushing out of the room, heading for the front door, opening it and hurrying outside. With Hadrian right on her heels behind her, she sprinted across his driveway, making her way next door to her house as fast her stilettoed feet would carry her.

The paramedics and police are on their way. Hadrian said, sounding slightly breathless from running after her.
