POISON ON Pink Paper
THE STORY SO FAR: Bree Plummer, newly installed vicar of Lower Melchem, has been trying to help local PC Guy Miller expose the sender of poison-pen letters. The policeman suspected cake shop owner Tanya Hart, but before either of them could tackle Tanya, she was found dead. Bree is horrified, knowing all too well how Guy despised Tanya. Then Bree is visited by Guy’s son, Stuart. He reveals that his father came home late on the night of Tanya’s death, acting strangely. Stuart knows that Guy and Tanya didn’t get on, and is scared that Guy killed her. Brooding on all this, Bree goes to inspect a leak in the church roof. She notices a wodge of pink paper plugging a gap and pulls it out, only to see those familiar, heart-stopping words:
The eye of Ra sees all.
Bree sat in a pew, clutching the damp flyers. In her previous role as a solicitor, she’d have looked at the ‘evidence’ coolly and made logical deductions. But this felt different. It felt personal.
A draught behind her indicated that someone had come into the church.
‘Hello, Vicar.’ It was Bert Lambton, the organist. He did a double take when he saw the flyers in her hand. ‘Took me ages to plug that gap. They were leftovers from a job I did few years back.’
