THE STORY SO FAR: After waking from a nightmare about the death of her niece Ann, Lyra Draycott, a well-to-do widow in 18th-century London, can still recall the first time she heard Ann sing. Ann’s talent was also recognised by her father Edward, Lyra’s brother. She is soon appearing in operas to packed theatres. However, alongside her brilliance, Ann has a rebellious, wilful streak that Edward despairs of. While Lyra takes Ann to task for her headstrong nature, she secretly admires her niece’s free spirit and ability to earn money. Edward asks Lyra to watch over his daughter, so Lyra encourages Ann to visit her when travelling to and from rehearsals. But one day, a distraught Edward bursts into Lyra’s house. Ann has absconded with an older man – and Edward blames Lyra.
Lyra stared at her brother in open astonishment, hardly able to believe her ears. ‘Ann has run off with someone? Edward, I’ve heard nothing of this, I assure you! Tell me what you know.’
Edward paced up and down her drawing room, now apparently ranting to himself. ‘I’ll have the devil horsewhipped for this, and the girl committed to a nunnery! Have you any idea where they might be?’ he asked sharply, turning on his heel.
Lyra shook her head, cheeks burning. ‘I told you, I know nothing of this!’ She paused. ‘Still, Ann is nearly 18…’
