About this ebook

The Assessis Occupation is at an end and the universe is free at last - or is it? Even as the celebrations begin, key members of Richtar's clone army are moving into position, ready to begin an operation to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

"The Operation" concludes the dramatic story arc that began in "The End" and continued through "Conflict of Interests'", "Slaughter" & "A New Hope".

Ian Kidd

I grew up in South Yorkshire, England, before emigrating to South Australia at the age of sixteen. My writing ambitions began as a child, when I became notorious in my class for writing short horror stories that would probably have them calling in the child psychologists nowadays! I have written everything from non-fiction ebooks to published short fiction, and served as script editor on two proposed horror feature film scripts for an LA based director. In terms of fiction I have written dozens of novellas, including more than 70 stories in the "Ian's Gang" sci-fi adventure series. I still live in Queensland, where I work as a freelance writer.

    CHAPTER ONE

He fingered the blaster resting on his lap thoughtfully as he looked back over his past.

The tiny infant, squawking as he opened his eyes to the real world for the very first time.

The toddler, taking his first, historic steps. The teenager, kissing a beautiful girl for the first time. The adult, screaming insanely as he stood over the grave of his wife, his high school sweetheart, the first girl he had ever kissed. His grief. His memories. His pain. His life.

    No.

He saw them, knew them clearly, but he knew also, deep down in his soul, that they were not his memories, but someone else's. Someone else’s. His memories began on a conveyor belt, waking up to discover a whole past, a whole set of memories that belonged to someone else. Someone else who was undoubtedly dead. He had known this from the beginning, known he was but an extension of the person who had lived, had remembered. The thought had bothered him, especially considering he was a clone who shouldn't be having these thoughts in the first place. But he had suppressed them, or rather his programming had suppressed them, replacing the nagging doubts with joy and fulfillment at the thought of serving the mighty Richtar and the glorious Assessis Empire.

The glorious Empire that lay in tatters, defeated and ruined.

The almighty Richtar who was now dead.

And now there was nothing to think about, except the military soldiers in his house, creeping stealthily toward his room, intent on the destruction of the unclean. Him.

Nothing else to think about except that, and his memories.

    Someone else's memories.

The soldier kicked open the bedroom door, weapon at the ready. A gunshot came from the direction of the clone and the soldier's reflexes took over, knocking him to the floor, rolling and diving up. Diving up to see the blood, the brains and the agony on the dead man's - no, the dead clone's! - face.

And diving up to see the shot had not been meant for him.

    On the planet Zerroff,
