Chapter 1

It was quiet.  Too quiet. 

Veronica didn't know where she had been taken, and her senses weren't able to pick up any clues.  Thanks to the blindfold that had been wrapped tightly around her face, she couldn't see a thing.  She was desperate for a sound, a smell, or a touch that would give her location away, but there was nothing. 

When she was first tossed into the backseat of an SUV in the driveway of her townhouse, she tried desperately to picture the vehicle's twists and turns in her head so that she could figure out where it was headed.  First, the driver made a right.  Now we're on River Oaks, she'd thought to herself.  A few seconds later, the car turned left.  Was that Rio Vista Street? she'd asked herself.  But after a few more turns, she'd lost all sense of direction.  She didn't have a clue where she was going or what was going to happen when she got there.

And now that she was apparently at her destination, she still didn't have a clue.

A hand tugged at hers, pulling her down a long, cold corridor.  The squeak of her sandals along the floor suggested that the building had linoleum floors.  There must not be anyone else here, she thought to herself, because someone would say something if they saw a blindfolded woman being dragged along.

After what seemed like forever, she was shoved into a hard chair.  A hand tugged at her blindfold, and once it fell from her face, she blinked half a dozen times in an effort to get her bearings. 

The room was dim, lit only by a small lamp on a side table next to a bed.  But it wasn't a regular bed.  It was on wheels, and it had metal rails running down both sides.

Am I in a hospital?! she blurted out.

What makes you say that?

She'd been so busy looking at the bed that she hadn't paid any attention to the man standing over her.  But once she heard that voice, it all came rushing back.  Her father had been the one who had taken her away at gunpoint, shoved her into the backseat of his Cadillac Escalade, tied a blindfold around her head, and drove her here—wherever here was.  In all that time, he hadn't said a word.

Until now.

Somehow, his voice sounded totally different to her.  This wasn't her beloved Papa—the man who'd loved her, raised her all alone after her mother died, and cheered her on at everything from debate matches to soccer games.  But the man looking down at her was a stranger.  The last few hours proved that she didn't know the real him at all.  She was terrified of what the real him was capable of.

What are we doing here? she demanded to know, trying to sound tough in hopes that it would make him think twice about hurting her.  Where the hell have you taken me?

You'll learn that in due time, he said coolly.
