Someone to watch OVER ME
THE STORY SO FAR: Janey Winters, secretary to Sir Desmond Ridgley, a big shot in the War Office, is concerned when her scientist father, Reginald, goes missing. Sir Desmond sends her to a lodging house in Canterbury, where she takes up war work with the WVS and meets fellow WVS worker, Ronnie. When Janey overhears Ronnie talking on the phone, she becomes concerned. Ronnie mentions her father’s name and a man called Stuart. Janey then meets Stuart, an RAF officer, who introduces her to Rebekah, a elderly woman who lives in a Romany caravan – a vardo – near to their lodgings. Later, Stuart takes Janey to a house in the city. Standing outside, they hear Ronnie shouting in German, followed by Janey’s father’s voice. Janey is distraught and passes out. She wakes in Rebekah’s vardo and when Stuart takes her home, he kisses her. But Ronnie is watching from the lodging house.
Janey said goodnight to Stuart and hurried into the house, her mind very much on Stuart’s embrace. Had he meant to kiss her in that way, or was it for the benefit of Ronnie, who had been watching from the doorway?
In the kitchen, Ronnie looked on as Janey prepared their night-time cocoa.
‘You should be very careful who you are friends with,’ she said as she placed cups and a jug of milk on the table.
