You need to be PUNISHED

As the teacher asked a question in class, my hand flew into the air.

‘Well done, Jade,’ she smiled when I got the answer right.

I loved learning, but more than anything it gave me a break from Mum’s boyfriend, Jason.

She was besotted with him, but even at five years old, something about him made my skin crawl.

He’d been dating Mum for a year – he lived next door to us, and he’d accidentally shot Mum while showing off his BB gun.

Instead of steering clear of him, for some reason it made Mum like him.

He was always trying to suck up to me, buying me gifts when he went away on work trips.

‘Say thank you,’ Mum prompted, when he handed me a new toy.
