Description

We are thrilled to chat with Rebecca Serle once again, this time about her new novel One Italian Summer. This book explores the powerful bond between a mother and a daughter, set on the breathtaking Amalfi Coast. We devoured this book in one sitting and yet it kept us talking for days! One Italian Summer is the story of a young woman who has lost her mother, who was her best friend and her first phone call. Carol passes away before they can go on their trip together, but Katy decides to go alone. In a magical twist, once she arrives on the Amalfi coast, Katy ends up meeting her mother as a 30 year old woman. ** We start by discussing the captivating setting of this novel, Positano. This book is a love letter to Italy. We loved hearing about the personal story between Rebecca and her own mother that is the genesis for this novel. (01:38)** Complicated Woman: Katy. Rebecca shares how she relates to Katy, calling this novel a letter to her future self. We love her response about deep platonic love between women! (06:45)** We discuss Carol and how Katy comes to see her mother as a complex, flawed woman. (09:45)** We read and discussed a powerful passage about the rage associated with grief. (12:40)** Fate vs free will is a favorite theme in Rebecca’s novels and this podcast. We loved chatting with Rebecca about how narratives are fiction and we get to choose the stories we tell about our lives. (16:15)** Rebecca always leaves a special message in her acknowledgements so of course we HAD to ask her more about this one. (18:49)** Of course we discuss astrology and Rebecca’s role in our astrological journey. (23:07)** We talk about The Gilmore Girls and the incredible fact that Lauren Graham reads the audiobook version of One Italian Summer. (27:15)** Rebeeca shares what she is loving right now. Titles in the series (100)

In Pop Fiction Women we deep-dive into the complicated women of books, movies and TV shows, along with the women that bring them to life behind the scenes. Think Fleabag and Phoebe Waller Bridge, Normal People and Sally Rooney, and so much more. In each episode you can expect us to: * Break down the protagonist as we ask what makes her complicated? * Identify the best scenes, which can mean sweetest, funniest, or most badass. Anything we love. * Recount the cringiest scenes. The ones that make you squirm. Sometimes it’s self-sabotage, sometimes it’s growth, but it’s always part of the process of becoming our complicated selves. * Play arm-chair therapist in What’s Your Damage, Heather? An homage to the iconic line in Winona Rider’s Heathers, we discuss how these characters got to be the way they are. * “What She Said” - the segment where we scour every essay and interview with the women behind the scenes and share some of our favorite first person quotes. Real life is as interesting as fiction here. * Look into our crystal ball and ponder where these characters are six months later and five years later. Typically, Kate gets very real and Carinn gets buck wild. * Provide a takeaway, aka that part in the podcast where we try to sound deep. We leave you with some parting wisdom, challenge each other with thought-provoking questions inspired by the work, and urge you to “stay complicated.”
