Description

Our fourth and final installment of our read-along recaps covers pages 247 through the end of Beautiful World, Where Are You. We’re so sad to say goodbye to our Sally Sundays and the conversations her novel prompts for us! ** We’ve both turned the corner on Simon & Eileen. We start with Lola’s wedding, in what Kate declares as her favorite chapter in the entire novel. It reads like a cinematic montage of the deep history of these two friends and lovers and provides clues to the dynamics of their relationship that will play out through-out the rest of the novel. (03:09)** Our four main characters come together and we’re a bit torn on how we feel about the change in structure. We learn why Eileen has been protecting herself and why - Kate totally relates whereas Carinn channels Simon and Alice in her interpretation. (14:48)** Eileen & Simon finally come together and have the communication we’ve been craving. It has us thinking big thoughts about how people love and how that looks different for each of them. Kate brings in astrology, declaring that Simon’s Venus in Pisces -- stay tuned for what that means! (25:52)** Carinn relates strongly to Simon and gets on the couch to discuss how she loves and connects. She makes room for Kate on there too because the way she connects is so very different. We debate the question: how do we remain true to ourselves but also be open for growth? (34:00)** Felix stirs the pot a lot in these pages, pushing the others and sharing astute observations. He and Alice are a dramatic, fiery pair, but we love the way they come together. (47:25)** We discuss our views on the happy but ambiguous ending. (53:10)** What She Said. We can’t finish our recaps without deep diving into first person quotes from Sally herself. She gives us a gem about unlikeable characters that we will hold onto forever! Titles in the series (100)

In Pop Fiction Women we deep-dive into the complicated women of books, movies and TV shows, along with the women that bring them to life behind the scenes. Think Fleabag and Phoebe Waller Bridge, Normal People and Sally Rooney, and so much more. In each episode you can expect us to: * Break down the protagonist as we ask what makes her complicated? * Identify the best scenes, which can mean sweetest, funniest, or most badass. Anything we love. * Recount the cringiest scenes. The ones that make you squirm. Sometimes it’s self-sabotage, sometimes it’s growth, but it’s always part of the process of becoming our complicated selves. * Play arm-chair therapist in What’s Your Damage, Heather? An homage to the iconic line in Winona Rider’s Heathers, we discuss how these characters got to be the way they are. * “What She Said” - the segment where we scour every essay and interview with the women behind the scenes and share some of our favorite first person quotes. Real life is as interesting as fiction here. * Look into our crystal ball and ponder where these characters are six months later and five years later. Typically, Kate gets very real and Carinn gets buck wild. * Provide a takeaway, aka that part in the podcast where we try to sound deep. We leave you with some parting wisdom, challenge each other with thought-provoking questions inspired by the work, and urge you to “stay complicated.”
