Description

We welcome Laurie Elizabeth Flynn to discuss THE GIRLS ARE ALL SO NICE HERE, which follows Ambrosia to her college reunion where she finds she’s being circled by someone who wants revenge for things they did ten years ago.** The Girls Are All So Nice Here has a whole slew of complicated women. (02:07)** The “unlikeable female protagonist” is a label that means nothing more than women who defy convention and expectation. We loved talking with Laurie about the way women are portrayed in fiction and how liberating it is to see a character who voices your darkest impulses. (05:35)** We read a passage from the novel that touches on one of our favorite themes: being SEEN. Laurie shares her views on love and it involves challenge and acceptance and all the things we like to discuss. (08:57)** Laurie tells us why she wanted to explore the dark complexities of female friendship. (10:57)** We discuss astrology. Laurie is a “typical” LEO, which makes Kate’s day, but she is on the cusp of Cancer so we discuss which traits she relates to with each sign. Then we try to guess the signs of some of her characters. (13:47) ** Laurie shares a story of the fate and luck involved on her path to publication. (15:33)** Laurie tells us about when she started to take writing seriously and how she found her confidence. (17:00)** Laurie has already been published as a YA author, but this is her debut in adult fiction, so we chatted about how she trusts the process and herself more now. (18:32)** We loved hearing what complicated women -- authors and characters -- that inspired Laurie. They happen to be some of our favorites too! (20:40)** We talk publication and babies and how Laurie manages her writing while raising three small children. (22:27)** The rights to The Girls Are All So Nice Here have been sold to AMC and Laurie shares her excitement and what her role will be in the adaptation. (24:11)** Laurie tells us what she is loving right now in books and TV (besides The Bachelor!). (26:03)Follow us on Instagram and Facebook @popfictionwomen and on Twitter @pop_women. Titles in the series (100)

In Pop Fiction Women we deep-dive into the complicated women of books, movies and TV shows, along with the women that bring them to life behind the scenes. Think Fleabag and Phoebe Waller Bridge, Normal People and Sally Rooney, and so much more. In each episode you can expect us to: * Break down the protagonist as we ask what makes her complicated? * Identify the best scenes, which can mean sweetest, funniest, or most badass. Anything we love. * Recount the cringiest scenes. The ones that make you squirm. Sometimes it’s self-sabotage, sometimes it’s growth, but it’s always part of the process of becoming our complicated selves. * Play arm-chair therapist in What’s Your Damage, Heather? An homage to the iconic line in Winona Rider’s Heathers, we discuss how these characters got to be the way they are. * “What She Said” - the segment where we scour every essay and interview with the women behind the scenes and share some of our favorite first person quotes. Real life is as interesting as fiction here. * Look into our crystal ball and ponder where these characters are six months later and five years later. Typically, Kate gets very real and Carinn gets buck wild. * Provide a takeaway, aka that part in the podcast where we try to sound deep. We leave you with some parting wisdom, challenge each other with thought-provoking questions inspired by the work, and urge you to “stay complicated.”
