Looking back, it must surely have been a coincidence, but we were young and impressionable and it all seemed so convincing at the time. Anyway, let me tell the story and you can judge for yourself.
About 20 years ago, the amateur dramatic society in our town was doing Macbeth. Anybody who knows the play will realise there aren’t many good roles in it for women – not unless the director is very modern – and only three are any fun.
So it didn’t take long for Hannah, Kate and me to decide what we’d like to do.
‘Witches. Let’s audition to be the witches,’ said Hannah.
Kate and I were a bit surprised because we thought Hannah might fancy Lady Macbeth. She was easily the best actress in our little group, and a year later, she was at drama school.
She’d already had a couple of small TV parts, although one of them was ‘corpse in the recycling centre’, which didn’t really test her skills. But, as Hannah explained, ‘There’s no point.’
