Shifting Your Mindset - Nicole Perry
Introduction
Hello everyone! This is Nicole Perry, and welcome to Shifting Your Mindset: Building Self-Compassion through Shame Resilience,
a course from Scribd Coach. Thank you for joining me.
Shame is a complex emotion, often tied with pride and happiness. It comes from that inner voice inside our heads that tells us we’re not good enough, that we could have done more, or everything that we have is because of luck, not hard work. Whatever that voice is saying, it can be difficult to ignore it. It shapes our mindset and how we show up in the world.
In this course, we’re going to do a deep dive on shame - why you’re feeling it, how to recognize it, and why your shame may be lying to you. We’ll also talk about ways that you can address your shame, developing self-compassion, managing your negative self-talk, setting boundaries that support your personal limits, and finally how to achieve contentment. All of this will help you be more compassionate and forgiving towards yourself and others.
You may be wondering why I’m qualified to talk about how to build shame resilience. I’m a registered psychologist with a private practice based out of Alberta, Canada. In 2012, I started a few therapy groups that were aimed at improving self-acceptance and self-esteem. Throughout the group, I realized that many members still struggled to find a sense of worthiness and belonging. They felt an intense level of shame, and that’s what was holding them back.
I knew I needed to address shame directly in my sessions, so I got to work. I started researching shame more thoroughly and integrated all of my learnings into my work, and now in this course. Above all else, I believe that compassion is the key to healing and success. You have to be kind to yourself and give yourself grace in order to fully heal. If you want to be successful in this course, you’ll want to follow a few guidelines.
First, be sure to give yourself time. Make this course a priority. I encourage you to pick a time of day or day of the week and mark it down in your calendar. We often leave ourselves as an afterthought, especially for our personal development. We don’t take time until after we’ve gotten everything else done. It may be difficult, but I encourage you to make a commitment to yourself.
If it makes it easier, you can also pick an accountability partner. It could be a friend, therapist, or anyone else who is important in your life. The main characteristic you want to look for in an accountability partner is someone who can be your cheerleader. As you go through the course, experiment with what works for you. Do whatever helps you.
At the end of each unit, we’ll go through exercises, and it’s critical that you do the exercises with me as we go. If you’re on the go, pause the course and regroup once you’re ready. I believe so strongly in the power of experiential therapy. That means I believe that healing doesn’t happen by giving you new information. Instead, it happens by having new experiences. The exercises will help you practice new ways of relating to yourself and actually begin
